Hello,

I'm new here, I guess you get a lot of people new to the site that have questions? I'm hoping one of you has some advice for me.

Right off the bat the question is: has anyone tried amitriptyline in transdermal creams and had success?

So now I have my question over with, this is why I have my question...

We have a cat diagnosed with Rippling Skin or Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS). I have done an advanced search and read the posts here.

After 2 shots of cortasoid (sp) that didn't work, he was put on amitriptyline. We had them compound this into a treat, tuna flavor. He hates it, would only play with it, like see okay it can be a toy. So we tried covering it in other food he liked. No way.

So next we had it compounded into liquid, chicken flavor. We get it down him but he gags, drools, hates us.

Our vet has informed us that this is a very bitter tasting drug.

We are going to try putting the liquid into a gel capsule tonight... an idea I did get off this board. Thank you.

Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts? Has anyone tried the amitriptyline compounded into a cream and had it work?

I had to give one of my kitties a very bitter tasting pill and I bought empty capsules at a drug store (advice from my vet.)
It worked wonderful for me, hopefully it works for you!

You can also use spray cheese and wrap the pill up in that.

I am also giving my cat a very bitter pill. Yesterday it got crushed in his mouth and he started drooling and foaming. It was aweful. I don't know how much got into him. So I got this thing from the vet called a pill pocket. It is a soft chicken flavoured treat with a hole in it for a pill. I hope it works!!!

My friend's cat gets amitryptiline daily and she puts the pill in a small gelatin capsule and puts a bit of margarine on the capsule. Then she just gives the pill. The gelatin capsule doesn't taste bad so it's pretty easy.

Hi,

Wow thanks for all the replies, I didn't expect so many so fast. This is a very friendly board.

Helen - Thanks for the article, but darn. It sure would be easy to rub something on his ear. But if it isn't getting into their system I guess it wouldn't help too much. Interesting article.

Crittergirl & Semiferal, we are going to try the gel capsule tonight, a little butter probably would help.

Hissy, I had to giggle when I read this, but then I started thinking it may work. Then I had to think is it low carb, then I remembered my cat isn't on low carb. Then I looked it up, not bad in the carb dept so if I snuck some it wouldn't hurt my weight goal.
But if the gel cap doesn't work, definitely try this.

Tormeline, had thought about pill pockets. Since we had it compounded into a tuna treat, and he still tasted the bitter, figured it might not work. But this will be on our list as number 3 to try.

Thanks for all the ideas and replies. Hopefully this evenings pill event will go more smoothly.

Cindy
