Awwww a polydactyl! Tiger's momma was an albino poly! Arent they the sweetest? Dixie would use her extra toes as thumbs to grab things

Yep- we have several polys, they are the neatest cats.

She uses them to grab things too! Polydactyl? Is that what kind of cat she is?

Polydactyl means multiple (poly) digits or toes (dactyl). Polys are also sometimes referred to as Hemmingway Cats since Ernest Hemmingway had a particular fondness of them. They are thought to bring good luck in some cutures.

Now I had heard of them being called Hemmingway Cats!

I had two foster kittens that had 7 toes on each front feet and 5 on each of the back, they looked like they were wearing snowshoes

Hiya, maybe not appropriate for Fur Pics, but I was just wondering, since so many of you have Poly's why do these cats have this? Is it certain breeds of cat? Does it benefit them and this is just the cat species 'upgrading' through generations? Or is it just simply a mutation?

A couple years ago we had 6 foster kittens, some who had 7 toes.

She looks just like Shiraz in some of those pics!! So cute... the extra toes on her are so adorable too!! Thanks for sharing!

Umm, yeah, it is, but it really isn't anything bad, is it? All the better for clawing at things. I think it's cute.
