hey there everyone! I have 4 lovely kittys, Ollie 14, Missy 2, and Simba and Star 4 months old.

I'm having a collar problem.... all my cats are indoor, but Missy on the odd occasion has snuck by.

awhile ago I bought her, a Safety buckle collar, lovely pink shade, i dont know if i'd set it to big, or if double loop was to big. (the annoying part of adjusable clasp collars is the double loop you get when made smaller!)

it was a fair time ago, but recently shes been at it again, and i'm getting worred, i have a ready made tag for her, and I bought a collar, now I think I regret! I didn't realise till it arrived it has this double loop im scared of her leg getting caught again, and of course in a few months I will be putting some on my kittens, I need to know there safe,
I worry so much it makes me feel really ill, when she got her lrg stuck I hadt o take her to vet, because it had made her underarm bleed, from walkiing it must have been like it all night, becauseshe gets run of the house, it must of rubbed her for hours.

this is the site I got the collars from; http://www.kittycollars.co.uk

im wondering if the collars nice and tight would the double loop make a differance or should I go for a safety collar more like this; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-HOT-PINK-C...QQcmdZViewItem

which my older cats ghad all the time!

thanks very much for your help.

With the collar you bought, should her leg get stuck, the buckle should release and she'll be able to get free, as long as she is strong enough to pull the collar off with her leg (if she is generally healthy, ti shouldn't be an issue). My cats have very similar collars and the rule I use when adjusting it for them is being able to get 2 stacked fingers under there (so I put one finger on top of my other finger and slide it under there) and 2 side-by-side fingers under there.

Shes a very healthy happy cat, it's just she has such a dainty neck becasue she was rescued and I don't think she ever had her mothers milk at 6 months she looked about 12 weeks she was so tiny.

thats why with this clasp type collar i've had to adjust it so its at its near smallest, which means the near whole collar has the double loop.

should that be a problem?

My Lola never got any bigger than 5.5 pounds. She wore a breakaway collar and never had a single problem. I found it off of her a few times, which means that someway, somehow, she had gotten it unclasped. She also had it adjusted to the smallest it could go. My Gracie's neck is also pretty small, and so she has a pretty good sized double loop also and has no problems.

There are the EXACT collars my cats (and my late girl, Lola) wear: http://www.vetbuy.com/catalog/produc...oducts_id=1049 Like I said, very similar to what yours have and we have no problems

Try putting the collar around your wrist and see how much force it takes to break it off with your little finger. If you think she can exert the necessary force to break it off, it should be fine.

If the catch seems too stiff, you can go back to the store & try out the clasps until you find one that's easy enough to break. There can be a lot of variation in clasp stiffness on different collars, even in the same brand and style.

Or you might want to try Beastie Bands - they're very lightweight and adjustable, even to fit small kittens. The excess can be cut off so there isn't a 'loop'. They release by stretching all over so the cat can slip out.

Thanks for all the advice, I put the safe cat collar back on her, with a heart shaped small tag with all her info on, she's been fine with it, and I can't see her getting her leg caught,

After having bad experiance before it made me worry. like we all do.

but these Safe cat collars are alot better than that collar I had a long time ago, I can't remeber the make, I remember the red an yellow packet though, never again.

thanks again for helping me out, I worry so much about my babys!

Sounds like you are using the same collars I do for my girls. No problems with them, even with Luna being very petite. I'm glad you found something to work!

I use the same collars with no problems. My kitties don't go out but I do worry they might get out with kids coming and going.
