Hi everyone! I've already posted in the health and nutrition forum, but now that we've solved the crisis at hand I figured I'd saunter over here to introduce myself.
A week ago yesterday we adopted two cats from the animal shelter in the area. We'd been looking at various cats and kittens at shelters in the city I'm from (we're living in a small town about 150 miles from the city I was raised in and my parents still live in), and we decided to check in our local shelter as well. Othello and Macbeth, originally named Patches and Poopsie (we changed their names when we adopted them, and they seem to be getting used to their new monikers), had just been dropped off at the shelter earlier that same afternoon by an elderly woman who could no longer care for them. They were in a cage right above and next to a bunch of barking dogs and were scared out of their wits. Even though they were really scared and not friendly, we had to adopt them. Turns out their previous owner hadn't taken very good care of them, but after a few mishaps they're on the road to health--they came to us with earmites and fleas. They're both about a year old and are some of the sweetest, most loving cats imaginable--always following me around the kitchen, always on our laps when we play video games or watch a movie.
Othello is an average-to-large "black" cat, though he really seems more like the darkest calico I've ever seen--he's mainly black with a good dose of dark brown patches and a few scattered white spots. He's the more affectionate of the pair, and is also the boss of the two (and of the house).
Macbeth is a big guy with long blondish-orange and white hair. He's very shy and spends lots of time exploring and looking for new places to hide, but at night he comes out and is amazingly sweet. He had the worse flea case of the two, and was missing a good deal of hair on his lower back and at the base of the tail. He's very affectionate with Othello and spends lots of time grooming him and following him around.
Since they've been together since kittenhood (and might even be from the same litter--but that's just a guess), they love to cuddle with each other and play with each other. I honestly can't imagine having one cat but not the other. When Macbeth hides, Othello walks around meowing until his friend comes to play with him. They really are a pair.
As for me, I'm a 20-year-old full-time college student (hence the living in a small college town). I live with my fiance in a small but cozy apartment, and with our kitties we're the perfect small family. I'm an English major and thus tend to be relatively anal about grammar and word usage--but I'm working on controlling that in an internet forum, where being casual is the rule!
At home (my parents' house), I have a black cat (Allie) and a black schnorkie (schnauzer/yorkie mix) named Maxie. They're both about the sweetest pets a girl could ask for, and I miss them terribly when I'm away from them--but of course Othello and Macbeth help with that. :-)
Usually I also have hermit crabs--I'm a member of www.hermitcrabassociation.com, but don't have any at the moment due to my recent moves among the dorm, home, and apartment. I also have lots of experience with rodents, and love fish. When we have a bigger place my fiance and I will definitely be getting a dog, too--we're partial to pomeranians, schnauzers, yorkies, and mini daschunds, but of course we know that it's all about the dog's personality, not just the breed. Anyway, it should be pretty obvious that I love animals of all types. Having pets brings me so much joy and enhances my life in unimaginable ways--of course, I have yet to have any children!
Anyway, thanks for welcoming me to the forums and I hope I can make a valid contribution--after much learning, of course!
Edit: here are some pics of the boys!

The boys on our bed--their favorite (but forbidden) place to nap!
