having problems with our first cat. in the beginning he was very friendly. have had him approx 4 years now and has been nutered. we got a second female cat a couple years later also been fixed. the first cat (male) went a bit funny not so cuddly as he used to be but no obvious problems he still came home every night slept on the end of the bed and played with the other cat. over the last few months though we have been seeing less and less of him. and it seems when he does come in its only for food and then hes gone again. he dosnt appear to be getting any thinner so there is a possiblity he is being feed elsewhere. tonight for example would be the first time we have seen him in about a week and he appeared out of the blue. we though we would try keeping him inside for a while by closing the windows and locking them as he has a nack for opening them and letting himself out. he would have been inside for about 3 hours give or take and we where heading off to bed and went to approch him to move him into the kitchen where the beds are and he got aggressive. growling, spitting, and generally not happy when we where getting close to him. his ears never went down and he never took a swipe more noise then anything. i finally , reluctlanty opened the window he was sitting infront of and he sniffed and dissapeared into the night.. not too sure what we should do. there is the possiblity he will come back like he has in the past but is there anything we could do. have others had similar problems? any help/advise would be greatly appreciated...

regards

Hello and welcome!

If it is the first time your cat is suddenly confined it is no surprise he reacted that way. Besides letting him loose after he growled, hissed and spit, did you try gently talking to him or calling his name? Perhaps he is turning feral.

You will have to win back his trust. Leave his usual meal out and stick around when he comes back for it. Talk to him. Call his name often. Be gentle. Check if he is hurt. Perhaps after one or two weeks, he may decide he belongs with you once again. Good luck!

Sounds like he wants to be an outside kitty, or that he has found another cat outside he hangs with , or a new home. Not much you can do, you have two options, leave him outside and make sure you provide him with food and water (which will bring in more cats) Or let him inside and keep him inside, regardless of his attitude or posturing he does.

It happens with multicat households sometimes, with the best intentions, we bring in another cat because there are so many that need rescuing, or because we think resident cat is "lonely." Resident kitty gets his fur in an uproar because his routine has changed and if left outside, there is a very real possibility that he will wander off to find someplace else he likes better.
