When I was a child we used to go on camping holidays a lot (leaving me with a horror of tents, I must say!). Well, once we arrived somewhere in Holland very late and my mum and I went to the camp shop to buy something quick for supper. She grabbed a tin of meat and I got some pasta, and we cooked and ate it (I can't remember what it tasted like - I think we were all too tired to notice). We did think the checkout girl looked at us kind of funny but we thought it was because we were crazy Brits. Then next morning when cleaning up I saw that the tin had a large dog on the side of it!

Depends on the brand/type. The closer it is to whole chunks of meat, the more likely I am to think it smells good. It makes sense; look at the ingredients. We feed our cats chicken, lamb, tuna, salmon, etc. It's not like we're feeding them canned mouse or sparrow; they eat much the same things we do. The meat portions of our dinners, anyway. (Present vegetarian company excepted, of course.)

Don't worry....my step dad made dinner last night and Mom brought some to work for lunch. So Mom was sitting there enjoying her lunch till I just had to tell her it smelled like cat food! But it did!!! It was porkchops and rice in a cream of mushroom soup gravy. I thought it was just me but my boss agreed!

My mother bought these new sheba things that have come out at the supermarket, the tuna one smells like pure tuna and it even looks better than the tuna we get, the cats go crazy from it, i have to admit i would like to try it
But im just too scared!

I suppose though if someone served it to me with out me seeing the tin i wouldnt even notice!

I do know that the manufacturers of pet food have human tasters - I saw a TV programme on it once! It is all produced to hygienic standards after all, and htere is no part of animal that is not eaten somewhere in the world.

But then again, I actually THINK that cat treats actually do smell very good!! Seriously! I would never try eating them though. I just think that most of them smell good. Don't ask.
Ok I haven't read this whole thread but had to add something to this.

Once I was eating some chips and decided to give my cats some treats at the same time. It was those dried fish/sardines - you know that kind? Well I got my hands mixed up and the fish went into my mouth and the potato chip went ot the cat!!! Haha it took a couple chews to realize my error!!!!

Well, I'm not tempted to try cat food now but when I was a little kid I sampled Tender Vittles on more than one occasion.

when my sister was little, she used to eat the dog's kibble
i've had a few cans of cat food look pretty appetizing...always thought if i was on a very limited budget, i could probably find one that i thought was edible!

Just a thought here... wouldn't it be better that we like the smell of our pet's food... because then it isn't something really gross that maybe they shouldn't be eating anyway?
