I would recommend either putting a new litterbox in the room you plan on moving it to, and keeping one where it is and then taking it away after the cat starts using the new one, (is that understandable??
) OR, move the old litterbox about 2 feet at a time per day, to the new room.

I was lucky. I was just able to move the box, then show the cat where the box was, and Hey Presto! the cats were using the box in the new spot!

My best suggestion is to simply show kitty it's new placement by putting him/her by it. He or she will figure it out soon enough. You might get a meow complaint or two, but it'll be fine.

I don't generally do it the way I had originally posted, but that's the way some books say to do it. I figure they're smart enough to figure it out, just some might be a little picky.

When I move the litter pans, it is done gradually. Small distances at a time until we get to the location. Stops all the confusion and prevents litter pan accidents.

Thanks. I have moved it before for brief periods of time (ie: 2 hours) and she figured out where it was and even used it in the new location, but this is going to be a permanent move and I didn't want her to regress or anything.

The cats house, we just pay the mortgage..
I decided when we got Nismo to move the litter box from the bedroom as the scratching at 5am was bad enough with 1 cat, so I put out another litter box in the new location, also so that Sleeves didn't have to share his litter with a stranger. From the moment we put the new one down I think he must have went once in his own one. So it was no problem whatsoever, once he and Nismo had established where to go to the toilet I just replaced that litter tray with Sleeves' original one as its bigger and has curved over sides to stop splilling.

Seamus and Gator could care less when their boxes get moved. I just pick them up, show them where it is, and they're good. The same when we travel. We went to FL for Christmas and when I had a box set up for them, I put them in it and they were just fine.

Thanks. Gals is usually fine when we got to my parents' house and she even has a different box. I just wanted to check. We're attempting to do it today. I'm just going to move it and show it to her. If it doesn't go well, we'll try the two boxes method.
