Yeah, there's a thread about it in IMO. After a heads up by another member, I did some of my own research because I was convinced at first that it was a hoax. Apparently, not only is it not a hoax, but it is a condition that can occur in many animals, including humans. What happens in cases that severe, called alobal holoprosencephaly, is that the brain does not develop into two lobes at all, causing facial and other deformities. (There are other, less severe, variations of the condition.) When it is as severe as it was in the kitten Cy's case, it is incompatible with life.

EDIT: This was a post I made to another thread someone started in The Cat Lounge. Just so everyone knows I'm not mindlessly repeating myself.

Based on the picture you linked too, I'd that picture was not real. I'd say the picture was doctored. Kittens are NEVER born with an eye that huge and OPEN.

That's what I thought too at first; I'm the queen of all skeptics. But sadly, it's real. His eye isn't open; he just doesn't have an eyelid.

I thought it was fake too but it was in our local paper today. There are other pictures that were taken from different angles. Poor kitty! At least she is running whole and healthy over the rainbow bridge.

It's fake that's all there is too it. Kittens are Not born with open eyes.
