It could be that he prefers colder water, water from a glass rather than a plastic bowl or he just sees your water as better. Do you drink bottled water? Many members here on TCS give their cats bottled water. Try offering him his water in a ceramic or glass dish and see how that goes. Make sure the water is clean and fresh.

Often when it comes to cats and kittens, there is no such thing as 'your' water, if it's there, it's his.

My cats just want to know what it is Mommy's drinking.
They'll climb all over me, stick their heads in all the cups, or knock them over on the floor - whatever it takes to satisfy their feline curiosity!

Mine have fresh water every day in a bowl but Dushka prefers to drink from a tap, a habit Wellington is learning, and Ellie will drink from a glass or from the plant saucers after I have watered them. I have to keep the toilet down to stop Napoleon using that to drink from! Persil hardly drinks anything - she never has, but she only eats wet food. They all like drinking dirty dish water if I leave anything to soak! So all cats are different.

Mine do that too. if I have a drink by my bed at night, I have to make sure it's not water as my cat stickes her head in the glass and drinks it ! even when it's not water she has a good sniff to see what it is ! She either wants it because it's mine or she's too lazy to go to her own bowl

Mine do the same thing. I have to remember not to leave a glass of water sitting without keeping an eye on it, or I'll be cleaning it up. LOL

Just water? Heck, Luna does it with anything I'm eating or drinking. It's like a wrestling match!

Oliver HAS to know what everyone's drinking! No matter what it is, he has to stick his nose in it to see if he'd like it... usually if it's water or milk, he'll take a couple laps.... he's got three places to drink his own water, but he wants to drink outa mommy's cup instead... I dont mind at all either! As far as food, if I'm eating at my desk or on the floor, he will inspect the plate and if there's something he'd like to try, he puts a paw on the edge of my plate... depending on what he wants, he sometimes gets a taste! I figure a little kitty spit cant hurt... after all, he grooms me all the time and when the dog (a black lab) gives kisses she finds ways, when it seems impossible, to get that long tounge in your mouth!

My cats just generally try to poke their noses (and paws) into whatever we happen to be eating or drinking. They're not allowed to have people food, but that doesn't stop them from trying! If I'm not careful, Spike will dip his paw into whatever I'm drinking, take a cautious lick, and if he doesn't like it, he'll shake his paw and spray water/tea/milk/whatever everywhere.

Some cats like variety. We have multiple cups, bowls, saucers and dishes all over our apartment, all filled with water for the cats, and we move them around periodically to encourage our boys to be interested in drinking. Spike would like it if we were to leave the faucet on in the bathroom sink, but he mostly wants to play in the water, not drink it, so he hasn't been able to have his way just yet. (That, and his brother Oz likes to sleep in the sink, which he wouldn't want to do with a constant drip on his head!)

Callie used to do this with my glass in the bathroom! I decided to get her her own glass and she's been drinking out of it ever since, and leaves my glass alone. I found one with a design on the side so I can tell how much water she's been drinking. I rinse it out and fill it up twice a day. She also has a water bowl in our bedroom and a water fountain in the living room, but this glass is up on the counter and she drinks from it most often.
