Hannah, our 7 month old kitten ate the tail off of one of the toy mice we have earlier today. It was a piece of leather, about 1/8" wide and a couple inches long. I've searched the entire room for it and can't find it, so other than waiting for it to pass (if it does), what should I be looking for just in case it gets stuck in/around her intestines? I'll call the vet's office in the morning, and might wind up taking her in for an x-ray.

She's eating, playing, sleeping, and peeing normally.

When Chay swallowed a piece of ribbon, Hissy suggested some cat nip to me, as its a natural fiber. The hairball gel is good too.

She'll probably be okay (Chay was), just keep a close eye on her for the next day or so. If she vomits or acts like her stomach bothers her, get her to a vet immediately!l Since you know she eats them, a good precaution would probably be to cut off all those tails next time before she plays with her toys.

It should be okay, our kittens used to eat those all the time (depending on the length) I cut the tails off now before I give the toys out.

You can use laxatone if you have some
Or canned pumpkin
loose leaf catnip
cooked and mashed green beans
or warmed mineral oil

any of the above is a source of fiber/laxative that won't hurt the cat

Thank you. This is the first time she's had a play mouse, so I didn't know she ate the tails. (Wonder what she would do with a real mouse? LOL) We have some other toy mice and she doesn't like their tails, but plays with them anyway. Must be something in the leather.

Will keep an eye on her and if we have any further problems, I'll be back!

Stephanie, I think I know the kind of mice you're talking about. They have the real fur, right? Albert LOVES those, and when I was out looking for some new ones (He KILLS them), I found some with feathers for tails. Maybe you could get her some of those? That way it still has a tail, but not a TAIL.

I know what you mean - Chay only recently became a ribbon eater. The first piece he ate had been there since before he came here, I think, and all of the sudden he decided he had a taste for ribbon, and no piece, big or small, has been safe since! So don't feel bad that she ate it, our little buggers are unpredictable sometimes.

I had to eliminate the fur mice altogether! Last summer, at one point, I had four feral kittens, and a feral male. I gave them each a fur mouse, and they loved them! They went crazy for hours! The next day they were still playing with them. The next day they were gone. Completely. Never saw them again. Since the cats were confined to one room with no place to stash them, I can only assume they had been eaten entirely!
Everyone seemed okay, and there were no repercussions, but that was the last fur mice they ever saw!

So far, so good! She's still eating, drinking, and using the litterbox appropriately. She slept in our room for the first time last night, so didn't have a BM until this morning after I left for work. My DH flushed it and didn't look at it thinking it belonged to our other cat. (What was he thinking!?!?) I did call the vet's office earlier this morning and was basically told to watch her for all the signs everyone's told me about here, so that's what I'm doing. Doesn't make it any easier, but I'm just watching her.

This is the first mouse she's had to play with that has the real fur. I think it's safe to say it'll be her last!
She does have some other little mice to play with, but they're not as attractive!

Thanks again!

I haven't met a cat that didn't eat the tails off the fur mice. That's what makes them so interesting. I pull out the plastic eyes and noses with tweezers, and cut the tails to about 3/4 of an inch, and just keep an eye on excretions.

yes...what are those cat toy makers thinking when they glue little parts on that cats will swallow? that's why I make so many of my own toys or supervise the ones that can hurt them.
