I've seen and held Koalas but again, only at wildlife sanctuaries.

Seen loads of kangaroos, though. Sam's right, they really are everywhere they just hide well!

Oh, and `crikey' is an exclamation. Say, for example, you won $1000 someone might say, `Crikey!! Well done!!'. It's a shortened version of `Crikey Moses!' - whatever that means...
So it sort of means like 'Wow!'?

I went to the outback steakhouse several years ago with a college friend who had an interesting sense of humor. He asked the waitress if he could order a large aborigine. I wish I could remember her face.

I'd like to see a real koala bear! My mom used to sing a song to me about them when I was a kid. Now if I saw a kangaroo, I'd probably stand there with my mouth gaping wide and my eyeballs huge like a dorky tourist taking pictures! But it would be cool too!
Crikey means like wholy cow, or wow!! or no way! or what the?!

Great Aussie word!!

Here are some of the 'aussie' animals I have met in my backyard - some here in Brisbane and some when I lived a little further up north

•\tnumerous snakes including one about 5 metres long and as thick as the top of my leg and most very venomous
•\tPossums galore – we get several every night and sometimes can feed them or watch them with their babies. I tried to save a baby when the mother was killed but it was just too young.
•\tBlue tongue lizards
•\tTicks (heaps!)
•\tScorpions (we have 2 pet rainforest scorpions)
•\tall manner of biting ants, spiders preying mantid, stick insect etc
•\tbeautiful wild birds (beautiful colours)
•\tan emu, when I was a kid
•\tkangaroos
•\tbandicoots
•\tgorgeous huge green frogs
•\techidnas
•\tbats (huge black things)

There are probably more but these come quickly to mind.
The Aust bush is quite unique.

A few years ago we went to "kentucky down under"
They forced me to pet a Gigantic Kangaroo, wallaby, ostritch ( or emu? ) some fuzzy rabbits. All of this enclosed in a large fenced area, where the animals are running around and your walking around in there "habitat". It was a nice habitat though.
I was terrified, to make things worse they made me pet the Largest Kangaroo, who when I approached him stood on his hind legs and put his paw on my shoulder. I nearly wet my pants.
a few minutes later I was tramatised again when they forced me into the avairy.. All I could think about was the movie "the Birds".
Terrifying experience overall.
My Family, who I was with thought it was hilarious though.

Sarah! *slap* We DO have roos here. You just have to know where to look. They're in the bush around the television stations in Tuart Hill, a few golf courses in the metro area, Lesmurdie and then there's the one I had a close encouter with on the way to Dwellingup. I have four screws in my arm as a permanent memento.

Reminds me of all the people who ask if we STILL ride horses to school here. Sheesh.......

(I have a friend who came up with a smart answer to that one. He said, "No, we ride flying carpets. Don't you?")

Oh my gosh! You all have lots of different stuff than us it sounds like! You can keep the snakes and bugs and scorpions though. I know we have some yucky ones here too, but I live far enough north we don't get a lot. I'll stick with out birds, racoons, foxes, deer, opossums, and the occasional bobcat or cougar or whatever it was that one time!

DH wants to go to Australia next month now!

It's so cool to travel and see animals you'd normally consider "exotic" just wandering around, like when we went to Alaska and saw moose, sea lions, and seals just out and about (the sea lions and seals were only near water, natch).

Here (central US) I only ever see raccoons, 'possums, deer, groundhogs, skunks, rabbits, various birds, snakes, frogs, etc. And of course all manner of bugs and spiders. And occasionally, in rural areas, beavers, bobcats and coyotes ... though you hear coyotes more than you see them. Once we saw a badger while driving down the highway in KC.

You should read Bill Bryson's `Down Under'. It's a great book - highly entertaining and with lots of crazy but true facts about Australia. We have SUCH a huge number of deadly, venomous, poisonous snakes, spiders, jellyfish etc here.... I never knew myself how many until I read his book!

My roommate went to Australia a few years ago and got her picture taken with a full grown male Koala. It's a great picture, but since I've heard the story that goes along with it all I can do is laugh when I see it. Apparently the koala...well...had a "thing" for my roommate and made a mess of her only moments after the picture was taken. She said she couldn't get it off of her.

Its good timing as we ate at outback last night!!! I'm sure grilled chicken breast topped with bacon and two kinds of melted cheeses is typical Aussie eating!!
This summer in southern Wisconsin a kangaroo was captured on a roadway. I don't think anyone claimed it as theres. Also another kangaroo was hit and killed by a car in the southern part of the state. What are the chances of that.
We have to watch out for wild turkey's esp in the late fall and winter months as they will do some damage to a vehicle. And the deer!!! We almost hit one a week after we got the new car!! Possums-so gross I stopped putting catfood outside because they were eating it.
