Is it sanitary to wash a used cat blanket from outside in my washing machine, but not at the same time with my clothes, just by itself. It has some urine stains and some dirt.

Great question! I need to know the answer to this too!

Not so much for a cat blanket, but something Brody (my dog) vomited on.... I want to wash it in hot water in the washer and want to know if that is sanitary.

I have outdoor cat beds for the ferals that I will wash in my washing machine separate from other items. If you can do it, wash and rinse with as much hot water as you can. I usually add enzyme cleaners to the wash when I do this.

The same for items inside the house that the dogs and cats have managed to make a mess of.

If you are concerned about your machine afterwards, wipe it out with a cleaner than is recommended by the manufacturer of your machine. Most of the manuals tell you what types of chemicals are safe inside the drum.

My cat peed on my bathroom rug one time and I washed it the washing machine. I really didn't see what the big deal was, if people can put cloth diapers in the wash or clothes that might have urine or vomit on them (didn't mean to get really graphic) then I didn't see any harm in putting a rug with cat urine in there as long as you washed it by itself with hot water.

I do it all the time. I use the laundry soap that you wash baby diapers in. It cuts down all the urine and stains in fine style.

I wash the animal things in my washing machine and then run a cycle with only detergent. I figure it cleans all the moving parts before I put my things in.
