We have a 20 week old male kitten who weighs in at 6lbs. Does this seem like a normal weight for a kitten his age? We're new cat owners so we don't really know where our kitten should be weight wise at this point in his life.

I think a lot depends on his bone structure, breed, etc. We have 2 Siamese - one is 16 lbs (2 yrs. old) and one is around 8 lbs (1-1/2 yrs. old) and both are fine weight wise. It really depends on each individual cat. That is sort of like saying that you and I are both 25 yrs. old so we should weigh a certain amount - can't be done.

Your vet would be the best person to be able to answer this question for you.

We took our kitten (Max) to his new vet (Feline only) last night. Our vet told us that he is a pound heavier than normal but he's not fat. We may just have a kitten that will be a bigger cat. We just want to be sure that he is as healthy as possible. The last thing we want is for him to become obese.

I disagree on the "one size fits all" i.e. pound per month. It depends on the body build and breed of the cat. A 5 month old rex kitten and a 5 month old maine coon kitten will NOT weigh the same thing!

If your cat is average type/build then 6 lbs at 5 months is about right. Does the kitten appear too fat or too skinny?

I have a 8 month old and a 7 month old kitten. The younger one is a male and is a bit heavier than the 8 month old female. Want I don't know for sure is how much should they be eating? I typically give them a can of cat food in the morning, sharing between the 2. However, the male gets more as he eats faster and more. The female eats most of what I give her but Oreo, the boy, finishes what she doesn't. Throughout the day, I have dry food out, and they have some of that, but not a lot. In the evening, it's a repeat of the canned food. Is this too much , too little?? I don't want the male to get heavy. The female is thin, but not sickly thin. The vet said she was fine for her structure..
Thank you

If you can, you really don't want to "free feed" Set up an automated feeder that doles out small amounts daily, or set out food at certain times of the day and then take it up after about 20 minutes. Dry food can air spoil and if it gets wet, it can also attract some nasty bacteria.

My ~8 month old is 8.5 pounds, and she still has lots of filling out to do - you may just have a cat that's going to grow big! However, if most of the bulk seems to be in the cat's belly, you might want to excercise/play with him or her more and cut back a tad on food.

Harley is 6.5 months and weighs just around 9 1/2 pounds. He's a big kitty, not fat, but very big built cat. He gets fed 1 bowl of dry food every morning before I go to work, and that lasts him all day.

The vet said that he's a very healthy and he's a very very active cat (believe me,
he's into everything all the time!) I don't think there's a certain weight for a cat at a certain age really, I hope not anyways, cuz if there is, Harley sure is in trouble!!

We have 3 kittens right now. One is 21 weeks and its 6.8 lbs and the other two are 20 weeks and one is 4.2 lbs and the other is 7.9 lbs. The two heavier ones r males that the small one is female and according to the vet they are all healthy at perfect weights for their size. I guess it just depends really on the genes themselves and what comes out more dominant.
