Our dog Zoe is only a bit bigger than our 2 cats. She's about a year old and the cats are about 9 months old. We've had Zoe about 4 months now and they get on quite well. They'll come cuddle with her when she's quiet. However she is often "in their face", running up too close and causing them to withdraw. If I stoop to pet the cats, she will run up and step on them. How do I stop this behavior?

She also tries to chase them around the house, and I think the male cat (Tig) enjoys it as Zoe will chase him out of the room and then return with Tig pursuing HER...so cute. My question is, sometimes I feel Zoe is being too aggressive and I tell her to stop. Should I? Or should I assume it is play for the cats too (even if they seem annoyed by it) and the cats will give her a swat when they want her to stop?

I would suggest obedience training for you dog. The leave it command is priceless when it comes to the cats.

Yup - definitely training. Our kitters are still terrified of Ruby and Chester because they are big and boisterous and want to play (Ruby much more than Chester, actually).

Also if your pup has a strong prey drive your cats could be in trouble regardless - I would suggest always supervising at this stage. He might want to just play but dogs are considerably stronger than cats and he could hurt them without meaning to.

She sounds as if she is doing it for attention.. if shes not being very aggressive, like, if she won't bite them or hurt them, then I'd ignore her. Ignore a bad behavior usually works to make it go away.

My dog used to chase the cats all the time.. I sued to yell at him and tell him no that he was a bad boy. but he just did it even more. I tried ignoring him and now the only times he does it is if he gets frustrated. (he hears sounds in the apartment next door and starts whining, sees the cat and takes chase, or if they are scratching on the furniture.. he seems to know that its wrong.
