I am only 20 years old (I'll be 21 in Feb) and I've had problems with constipation for little over a year. I have tried every thing. You name it, I've tried it. I have been to the doctor several times and they just dismiss it as being IBS. I however, think there is a bigger issue. This happened suddenly, not gradually. I also bleed. My grandmother died of colon cancer. Sometimes I go two weeks without going to the bathroom. My stomach swells, but when I finally am able to go, it goes back down. This time it is swollen and it will not go back down. I have a lot of sharp pain around my pelvis area. I am going to the doctor in the morning, but the nurse said it is really hard for someone so young to get a colonoscopy. I am really scared and in a lot of pain. I am terrified that they will not accept me to get one.
Please pray for me and that they will grant me one. This has been going on for over a year and I need to know that everything is okay down there for my sanity and well being.

dear Rachel, I truely hope all goes well. If doctors don't believe you make a lot of noise until someone does. You need to see someone! I look forward to hearing some good news!
Best wishes.

Hi Rachel,

I'm a RN. I also have IBS and a family history of colon cancer. Trust me that when you mention your symptoms and family history to a doctor, they will (if they're competent) recommend a colonoscopy.

I have had one, and they're not nearly as bad as you might fear them to be. Please feel free to PM me if you want!

You said you have seen a doctor several times and your problems have been dismissed. I'm not an RN or anything like that, but it sounds like you should definitely see a different doctor, and if your condition indicates it, get referred to a specialist for testing.

Sending lots of prayers your way, and I hope you get some medical help and feel better soon!

I find it apalling that you've been dismissed so easily!
You need to see more doctors, and start kicking up a stink if they don't take you seriously. They supposed to be concerned with their patients, and your situation should have them concerned.

Rachel, my prayers are with you too. Please get another opinion if this doctor doesn't take you seriously this time.

I went to the doctor today, and they took an x-ray of my abodmen. My doctor said it was just to tell how backed up I am. I will get the results on Monday. She said my stomach felt really firm and I probably was backed up really bad. I brought my mom along this time and she got the point across finally. My doctor said that she will refer me to get a colonoscopy.
She said all my bloodwork is normal so that is a good sign. I still could have polyps though. I know something is causing blockage. I won't go into details though. Thank you all for your prayers!!

I'm glad you'll finally be tested and find out what is going on

I'll keep you in my thoughts and hopefully it's nothing serious.

Rachel I think you are incredibly brave and take my hat off to you.

My son was experiencing similar symptoms when he was very little (3 years old). He had a colonoscopy and bowel biopsy and they removed a fairly large polyp. He has been fine since although since reading your post it occurred to me that he has been complaining quite a bit about tummy pains. So I should take him to get checked out as I know the polyps can grow back sometimes.

I am sure you will get some answers and get things sorted out. I hope all goes well.
Thinking of you.

I'm glad to hear that the doc finally did something for you.
Hope the colonoscopy goes well on Monday. Gee, they should make a Hallmark card for that one! "Have a Happy Colonoscopy!"

Umm, seriously, it's good that you get this checked out and I hope it's nothing too serious.
