What is your general opinion?

I ask - because when growing up with cats that went out they always knew how to get home.

I'm sad because I saw my neighbors posters up around the neighborhood...his sweetheart calico Cosmo is lost. She is a dear and friendly, and I've never seen her more than 10 feet from her front door. How can she be "lost"?

What usually makes a kitty go missing in your opinion?

Yes, cats do get lost. If they are indoor only kitties, once outside, they can become overwhelmed by sounds, sights, and smells and just take off running. Or they could be pursued by dogs, or mean kids, or even adults. If they are not spayed or neutered and allowed outside, your chances of losing them increase, especially during kitty season. They follow the scents and mate and sometimes get injured and never make it home again.

When I was younger....my cat Buttons got lost after we moved from Washington State to New Jersey. Buttons had always been an indoor/outdoor cat so I didn't see any issue with letting him outside in his new environment....he didn't come home and after weeks of searching....we never did find him.
He was such a great cat that my only hope is that someone found him and took him in. I won't ever allow my cats to be outdoors again...they are just too precious to me and I don't want to risk losing another one.

Right after New Year's Eve you might notice an increase in the "Lost Cat" ads. People let their cats out, and they become so frightened by the fireworks that they often run off, never to be seen again. Another problem is when cats get in other people's cars, go unnoticed, and then get out or are simply put out when the car reaches its destination. We had a case like that right after Christmas last year. A cat was found in our town, and was luckily chipped, so his owners could be tracked down. They lived around 350 kilometers from here, and were frantic. One of their neighbors was here visiting relatives, and either didn't notice the cat, or pretended he hadn't.
