Hey
Who uses pedometers (those step counter thingy's)? I'm looking to buy one and finding it all rather confusing, especially since the top rated one on consumer reports doesn't seem to be available in Canada

What kinds do you folks have and what do you or don't you like about them?
Thanks
Jess

I got a cheap one at a discount store, and it wasn't very accurate. I'm guess mid-range price ones would be better. Remember to measure your stride.

I got one at wal-mart for like 10 bucks. its pretty accurate. you put in your stride length and get to stepping!!! just remeber to look at the number before you drive somewhere because the bumps make it count!

I have one-its called Accusplit Alliance 1590.(www.accusplit.com) I find them difficult to calibrate.
I measured of a one mile trail and you have to mess with the lenght of your stride to get it to measure out to the same mile.
Plus I don't know why my directions went-I hope they have info on their website!!

Home Health care (in Shoppers Drug Mart) sell one that my neighbour has she recommended it to me - its the T-zone and has a built in radio so you can walk and listen helping you to stay out longer (which with the wet weather we have been having I don't want to do
) and tells you how many steps you did as well as calories burned and comes with a free 'fat analyzer.

Edit: Oh and its $30 and featured in the sale mag this week

I just use the digital step-counting kind. My stride length varies too much (depending on terrain, energy level, how much my dog stops to sniff) for a distance counter to be accurate, so there's no point in wasting the money on a fancy one - I just aim for 10,000 steps a day.

I have a step-counter one, too. After going through a few cheap ones and finding that they were counting a bunch of extra steps (like logging 2,000 steps during my drive home), I invested in a $20 from SportMart. I forget the brand, and I don't have it with me, but I'll check. It has a delay, so it doesn't start counting steps until you take 5 consecutive ones, then it adds in the 5 and starts counting. I find it to be much, much more accurate.

That sounds good!
One of the ones I was looking at is rated by consumer reports as being the best and you can put it in your pocket. BUT the buttons are exposed, which makes me wonder about accidently pushing the buttons while having it in my pocket, I don't like the looks of the thing AND it's $50 plus shipping. The step down from it logs the weeks progress and calculates arobic steps seperately. It just doesn't work in a pocket..it's $25. I'd be interested in seeing what yours is too!

I got one to test out when I purchased one for a friend's Christmas present, and I've really enjoyed using it! At first, I was surprised how few steps I actually took in a day. Now, it's fun to make it a goal to walk further and increase my total steps! Especially on busy work/shopping/cleaning days, the steps really add up!
