Hi I have a Birman who calls for me at night and I need a solid night of sleep. If I keep my door closed he makes a very loud sound which would be spelled ROOOOOOO. And if I keep my door open, he won't come on my bed and lie down, but instead meows until I wake up and verbally invite him onto my bed, which means I have to wake up. How do you get a good night's sleep with a Birman?

Thanks,

Breindel

This sounds like a common problem from any cat owner. He sounds bored and might do well with a buddy (right now it sounds like you are his only buddy). Check the behavior forum as there are a lot of threads on cats that keep their owners awake at night. You can do things like heavy play sessions before bed, feliway, among other things to help the cat settle down. If another cat is a possibility that might help too

Hi Solarity,

Thanks for replying. He does have a buddy, we got a new kitten a couple of months ago. Valentine was upset because Blueberry (the kitten) was sleeping. He was sleeping with my daughter in the adjoining room and Valo woke them up with his ROOOOOOOing. Then my daughter came in my room and woke me up. But anyway, I appreciate your suggestions. Your before bed game is an interesting idea I will try out. What is Feliway?

Feliway simulates feline pheremones you might try putting a diffuser in your bedroom but they are expensive. It helps all sorts of behavior problems. It sounds like the kitten might have upset his routine then perhaps. At night when he bothers you its important that you don't give in to him. If you talk to him at night by inviting him on your bed then you are encouraging the behavior. But how to stop it? Thats the hard part as it can result in sleepless nights. One idea would be to shake a bottle of coins at him but late at night this is an awful thing to do as it startles the cat but wakes you up at the same time.

You could do a heavy play session before bed and then bring the cat into the bed with you. Whether he stays or not is one thing but it might get him to know you are settling down now.

Does you cat like watching tv? If you have a tv not near the bedroom you can put on one of those feline videos with birds and stuff that repeats through the night and might keep him preoccupied for a while.

I think in time if you don't reward his calls then he will stop but in the meantime it can be somewhat painful as the lack of sleep builds up. Usually its the new kitten that causes the problems. All cat owners go through it at some point though.

I can't think of anything else for now. Oh and I'm guessing your cat is fixed?

He has a scratching post with a resting bed attached on top and didn't have too many toys--they get lost behind furniture so fast--but he does now since the holidays!
