need some paint shop help

I'm having trouble with setting the background of a new image. I'm trying to use the texture feature but no matter what texture I select it just overlays it onto the brick texture. So everything has bricks in it. Any thoughts on how to get rid of that???? I've tried everything I can think of!
Thanks!

Are you setting it while choosing the color for the background? I pick out a color, click the "texture" box, then choose the texture I want, and click okay. I haven't been using the software for very long, and find that it has a lot of "bugs".

Not really bugs, but I swear the "help" manual tries to make it harder sometimes .

Which version? I use Paint Shop Pro 9. I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, you're using the floodfill tool and selecting a texture? You can overlay a texture with any of the tools. Select your color by clicking on the color palette box, make sure "texture" is ticked on the palette and select your texture by clicking on the texture picture which will bring up your choices. Pick your angle and scale, click OK and you should be good to go.

This is really helpful info! I'm still trying to figure out my PSP X.

Okay, this is weird. I've been playing with PSP all day trying to figure it out and just did! No matter what texture I select it looked like it had gray/white squares in the background of it. Turns out it's the transparency showing through. If I save a blank new image with just a textured background and then re-open it the sqaures are gone and it looks normal. That's kind of annoying but at least I can do something with it now. Now I can go back to being addicted!

Okay, the way to get rid of the gray and white squares is when you start a "new" file, make sure that "transparent" toward the bottom of the popup box isn't checked. Also make sure you pick a color for your initial background you like off this same box by clicking on the "color" box. White is a good choice since it's easier to see what everything else is going to look like against it. When you said "bricks" I thought you meant bricks since there is a brick texture.

Wait 'til you get into layers . That's when the fun begins!

I thought it was bricks. Silly me! The problem though is that I don't have the transparent box checked. Everything just seem to turn out that way. Quite annoying. I think maybe it is a bug in the version. Or maybe a bug in my brain! Who knows!?

Hmmm, , I see there have been a couple of point upgrade patches to PSP X (Find them HERE ), but I don't see where they address such a prob. I'd be willing to bet there's some tiny little choice buried somewhere down through umpteen menus that is/is not checked. Either that or we're not on the same page , so to speak .

This is what we're talking about, yes? (clickable thumbnail):

Anytime you check off "Texture" in the Materials pallete, it will be transparent.

Apparently you must be starting your "new file" transparent instead of with a white or colored background.

If you don't want a transparent background, whenever you open a new file... uncheck "transparent" & select the color that you want to start with.
Or if your background is aready transparent, just add a solid white or colored background & then put your textured background on top of the solid one (in a different color) & then the blocks won't show through.
If you lay the exact same color of your solid & textured background together, the texture won't show up.

For those of you with PSP X, I've found the "PSP 9 For Dummies" book helpful. I'm not artistic, and have the German version of PSP X, but the book (in English) has helped quite a bit. I've finally figured out how to download new "tubes" and picture frames, too. I asked for Photoshop Elements for Xmas, and my husband bought PSP X instead, but now I'm glad he did, because it seems to be a bit simpler to figure out, and there are so many tubes available for those of us who can't draw.

Tricia,

You amaze me. I know you frequently post about not being the most technologically savvy person in the world, and I realize that you are fluent in German, but now you are trying to master a tough piece of software in a language that is not your native language. to you.

Thanks, Deb. Actually, I'm learning some English computer terms by comparing the book to the software. Almost all my software is in German, including all the Microsoft stuff.
