I have searched this and my conclusion is they are about the same size. I always thought it was Maine Coons then I read Ragdolls were the biggest domestic cat. I am sure if there are any breeders here of these breeds you could answer which breed is bigger? This is just something I am curious about as I am often asked this question by family and friends since I am the cat lover.

What I have read,Maine Coons can get up to 18lbs and Ragdolls can get up to 20lbs. As in any breed, there can be cats that get larger or smaller than standard.

I did more research on this it does look like the Ragdoll is the largest but only by a few pounds.

I hear all over that Ragdolls are bigger than Maine Coons but I don't think they are. I think they are pretty equivalent. And yes some are bigger than others. I just can't come to grips that Ragdolls are "the largest breed" as I've heard everywhere. Maybe I'm partial to Maine Coons.

In Ragdolls or Maine Coons, I would think the size is going to depend on the line that is being bred. If the cats that the breeder are working with are large, they should continue producing larger kittens/cats. If the breeder looks to improve coat, or eye color, ect, then the larger size could be lost, while they are attemting to improve their lines. I have seen the Maine Coons and Ragdolls close to each other at cat shows, but most of the cats are young adults that haven't reached full maturity yet.

I live in the No. Va area near DC.
Breeds do have size variants. Right now the worlds largest cat
is a ... Maine Coon, LOL! Huge beast. (If he hasn't been displaced.)
but NOT fat...Versimo bred him...

I would think Maine Coons are heavier boned and Ragdolls are
more "fur"... just my two cents and I'm emphatically not a breeder -
I just love Coons!

From my experience of showing cats since 1992 and breeding them since 1999 - and with my Nana's 50 years of experience of being an international cat show judge I have found the Maine Coons to be bigger. I hate saying a big fat Ragdoll! that's not how they should be!

In the 80's and 90's the Guinness book of world record had the ragdoll as the largest breed of domestic cat. I do not know if that has changed. I think you have to judge the breeds as a whole not individual. For ragdoll male it is 12 to 20lbs and for maine coons it is 13 to 18lbs. I am sure in each breed you will find males that exceed these weights.

Ragdolls are bigger because there normal size is from a small female 15lbs to a big male 20lbs or more. It also depends on if they are neutered. Maine coons can get up to 18lbs but aren't necessarily going to be that big.

Turkish Van Males can also get up to 20 lbs, but don't finish growing until they're about 5. Gibby is about 12 now and he's only 1.5

Im a fact book I was reading said the largest cat on record (for that book in that time) was a male ragdoll. I have "a daily pet tip" from the practical pet care site displayed on the web site I used to have, and about 5 weeks ago it said the largest breed of cat was the ragdoll, untill then I thought on average coons were bigger, but from the ppc site they say ragdolls are the biggest (im sure on average since other breeds will get one that may be heavier)
