For the past 2 weeks, my husband has been seeing a young adult cat outside in the early morning (4am) and at night time when he gets home (around 7:30-8pm). He says it looks much like a bengal or a similar breed. It has golden fur and black spots (not tabby), and it has a smaller head than a normal cat. Whenever he calls to it or talks to it, it grows very afraid and runs off. We are very afraid that this cat will get run over or something. We live right by a highway and have seen many kitties dead on the side of the road already.

Should I find a way to capture this kitty? We live in a small apartment, so I don't know how we would go about doing this...

If it were me, I'd trap it. Put the trap somewhere that maybe people won't see it, during times when you're home. Make sure you check the trap often so he doesn't get too cold in it. Maybe put it so you can see it from a window so if the door is sprung, you can see it from the window instead of going out there to check it and possible scaring him away from it. Put some really stinky yummy stuff like tuna in it. We put ours in a Rubbermaid container with the trap door sticking out and then line the inside of the Rubbermaid container with warm blankets and put the lid on, so it's dry and not too cold. If it's cold out and they smell food, they usually go right in.

It's great that you care about this cat. Definately you should borrow a trap (you can usually borrow one from a vet or your local humane society). Alley Cat Allies has some good information for beginners on how to trap.

You will want to take this cat to the vet to get it spayed/neutered and brought up to date on shots. Below is a list a low cost spay/neuter clinics in MA:

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips.. but I just don't know how I'm going to pull this off. Our apartment complex does maintenance two to four days a week, so I might have to try this on weekends only
I don't know how the landlord would react to maintenance people reporting a trap outside of our window.

I can only hope we save this kitty in time or that someone already has!

Well..you can always approach the landlord and explain that you are trying to help a cat that you have seen...who knows...the landllord may be happy that you are trying to do something about it.

I would also contact a TNR group in your area:

They may have literature for you to share with the landlord.
