I've got a telephoning cat, and had to laugh when a local reporter complained about his new cat always using the phone a few weeks ago, so it doesn't surprise me.

Sierra has answered the phone before, and has also knocked it over and phoned someone on speed dial! Our babies are so brilliant!

That's a cute story, but I wasn't willing to believe it until it involved speed dial.

You have the shaved Bonito packaging company on speed dial?

Cats are quite good at finding the right buttons, Ryan. Jamie's favorites are "redial" and "return call", which we can only deactivate by entering about 10 zeros, but he somehow managed to call people in Cuba and New Zealand, and I'm 100% positive that neither one of us placed or received calls to those countries.
I think we underestimate pets. We had a German Shepherd/Saint Bernard mix who used to answer the telephone when we weren't home - we'd find the receiver on the desk, and wonder how it got there, and finally got wise when people complained about the "heavy breathing" they heard when they called us.

Wow, and I thought my cats were smart. That is just amazing.

Growing up, my family cat Frisky saved my brother David's life. David had just come home from the hospital after having his tonsils removed. He started hemorraging during the night, and Frisky awakened my Mom. She was very insistent that Mom go to David, and he was rushed to the hospital, saving his life.

Yes, cats can be very very intelligent, and put the pieces together to problem solve.

That is one awesome kitty!

My cat Tinsel saved my mom and I once. Mom fell asleep when she was boiling a chicken for soup. I was playing in my bedroom with my rug shoved up to my door, which was closed. The house was full of smoke and the chicken was very burnt. Tinsel woke mom up and pestered her several times before Mom realized the house was full of smoke. Tinsel was our hero!

I saw that on our news yesterday after I got home from work. That is so neat. Cats are really quite intelligent! Though all of us already knew that!

I told my cats about that story this morning and told them they needed to shape up. All they do is sit around looking cute and asking for food!

I've merged two threads on the same subject.

What an awesome cat Tommy is!!

Fox News interviewed the man, and showed some video of Tommy. Tommy is a VERY cute and curious little orange tabby. (He was quite curious about the camera ). They also talked to a professional animal trainer who said that cats are absolutely smart enough to learn anything a dog can, it just takes a slightly different training technique.

Have you ever wondered where the expression "copy cat" comes from? I swear that cats learn just by observing what you do, e.g., some cats will actually flush toilets, turn on faucets, or open doors. They know that you press buttons, levers, and switches, or pry or twist off lids.
I believe the main difference between dogs and cats is that cats learn things in their self-interest, rather than to please others, and have far more dexterous paws. They're definitely not "dumber" than dogs.

Jupiter can open doors, i mean twists stiff handles and open doors.

I didnt teach him to do that, he taught himself!

but i must admit i am slightly dubious about cats dialling 911..

Jamie not only uses the "redial" and "return call" buttons on our phone, but has managed to place international calls (as I mentioned above, he's called Cuba and New Zealand, and also returned a call from Tokyo). Our phone "peeps" when you press the buttons, and I think he just likes the sound. It's an intercom type of phone (I'm hearing-impaired, so there's a built-in amplifier), and he seems to know enough to meow into the microphone. I called the manufacturer's hotline once, to ask how I could disengage several buttons, and the people I talked to were in hysterics. Since then, other people have said that their cats also phone, so at least I know that we don't have a "freak" as a pet.
He's the third pet we've had that had a special relationship with phones. We had a German Shepherd/St. Bernard mix who answered the phone (he would pick up the receiver and snuffle into it), a Boxer who destroyed phones when they rang too long (we had to buy a new phone every 3 or 4 months, over a period of 10 years), and now Jamie.
So I definitely believe that a pet can be smart enough to speed dial 911.
