Hey i have a 18 week old cat. He is already around 6 pounds and i give him food whenever he starts to meow and bite my feet. But i do not want to over feed him so if anyone could help me out it would be awesome

I would have you talk to your vet... if kitty is truely getting chubby start set meal times rather than if I nibble mom I get feed ..

6 pounds doesn't sound that big, I think my cats were around that weight at that age. I agree with incorporating set meal times. Also, feed more wet rather than a lot of dry. Wet has less carbs which is better for keeping weight down.

I inherited an abandoned kitty around 8 months old...weighing around 5 lbs at the time. I always left water and food out....she ate when she wanted...flaked tuna put strain on her kidneys (proof in the blood tests before and after taking tuna away)....Cat, Princess, is 16 now...weighing around 5 lbs again (after getting to be around 6.5 - 7 during her years)...I got a companion cat, Snowy, when Princess was 11....As a 1 yr old, Snowy was a taller and larger cat...the two never became close unfortunately and after 5 years Ms. Snowy is now a fat 16 pounds...and Princess still small. Snowy intimidate Princess when I am not home (I can tell due to the different behavior when I get back from a trip where Princess won't get on bed or sleep in same place any more...which is upsetting and I am working to get Princess out from sleeping in my closets now....(bad Snowy, of course)....but, anyway....food has always been out....fresh wet food daily...I think as an only cat, it should not be a problem. This was low maintenance for me. Some like rigid schedules. I can't adhere to that with crazy work schedule. But, I know, Snowy needs more running around and.....maybe a tread mill for her next birthday (just kidding)...Happy holidays.

Dry food has a lot of calories. Wet food really is better for your kitty. Ours get about 1/3 - 1/2 cup dry food to nibble on per day (shared) and a can of wet food morning and night.

Please dont feed your cat a 'bottomless' bowl of dry food - there is a very high chance your cat will get obese with that, and the health probs then are so high. I personally prefer a mainly wet diet with some dry (although my female prefers it the other way round)

For a kitten I strongly recommend letting them free feed on very high quality dry food and giving canned food twice a day. If they learn that food is not a scarce commodity then they will be less likely to overeat as adults.

kittens burn so many calories from excercising and play that they can pretty much eat all the time.

keep them well fed on a high quality diet as they have small bodies that need to grow.
