Anyone know if it's safe to run your self-cleaning oven (on the cleaning cycle) with cats around? I have read that the fumes that are often given off during the first few cycles are deadly to birds...

Has anyone heard anything bad about self-cleaning ovens and cats?

Well I haven't had any problems, but they do smell pretty much everytime you use them, it takes a long time, and it gets pretty hot I think that is what makes it smell, you may want to do it at night and put the animals in a spare room if you feel leary of it, I don't put mine up but you could if it will make you feel better, hope that helps

I don't think there is any problem. The only thing the self cleaning oven does is get very hot, much hotter than the baking cycles, and burns off all the stuff inside. You may want to open a window a little or use the hood vent if you have one, just to help eliminate the smell. One word of caution however. I would only use the self cleaning cycle while you are home and there to supervise and not during the night while everyone is sleeping. The oven will get extremely hot and the stuff inside can catch fire. This is normal if there is a large buildup inside your oven, but I would not want to be away from home or sleeping when that happens, just in case

My oven is self-cleaning. There has never been a problem using it, either around cats or other animals. Including my youngest son...

Seriously, it does get very hot. And, as was said, if the build-up is heavy, there will be smoke and fumes. Just turn on your vent fan or crack a window for ventilation.
