I agreed to foster a pregnant mom last August. One week later she gave birth to 7 kittens--2 males and 5 females. I intend to keep the mom and 2 of her kittens. I have already adopted out 3 others. That leaves 2 to find forever homes. Anyway, yesterday morning I had the mom and the 4 kittens 'fixed'. They are home now and sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. When they are awake they hiss and growl when another gets near them. Does anyone know what causes this agressive (defensive?) behavior and how long I can expect it to last? Thanks for any information/advice you have.

Welcome to TCS! I'm glad to hear all the babies got fixed too. I'm not an expert, but I believe I've heard that sometimes the new scents and things cats pickup on themselves at the vets can cause things like that to happen. Maybe try putting things with your scent around them all and then mixing them up to help them readjust to one anothers scents. Also they are all probably in pain so they might be just saying 'Hey backoff buddo! Don't touch me!'

Thoes are my ideas, someone who knows more will probably be around soon! Welcome again!

Welcome....I live in Northern VA as well. To answer your question...it is not unusual for cats that have been fixed at the same time to all of a sudden hiss/growl at each other. They probably don't recognize the scent of each other and are very stressed.

This advice has been given by Hissy before and I think in your case it may help:

You can neutralize their scent with pure vanilla extract. A small dab under their chins, between their shoulders and the base of their tail several times a day can do wonders.

I hope the you are following up on the 3 kittens that have already been placed to ensure that they have been spayed/heutered.

Welcome!

I hope the scent fades quickly. I know that there is always growling and hissing after vet visits at my house.

The same thing happens to me each time I take my two to the vet. They all have the smell of the vets office on them, so they don't recognize each other. This will fade within a few days, but in the meantime you can try the vanilla extract suggestion. You can also rub them all down with the same towel so they all have each other's scents on them. It's probably a good idea to call the vet just to be sure, but it's most likely just an unfamiliar scent issue.
