Hi again everyone, I have another bizarre question...

Sibyl had her litter of just 3 kitties a month ago and we have enjoyed watching them grow and become little personalities, but I am a little worried about the 2nd born...

He doesn't seem to be developing as well as the other two and although he is as big as them his motor functions are a bit backward. When he wanders around his box he only seems to go in reverse.

Although hilarious to watch, it is a bit worrying.

Any ideas or experience with this behaviour?

Have tried letting him out of the box and tapping his little bum forward but all he does is back into my hand...

He fights and plays with his siblings fine and eats well....

any other ideas???

has he been checked for worms? is he kind of scooting his bum?

it might be that he's itchy and is scratching his butt on the floor.

my breeder friend dave said

well if the mom was not vaccinated that could be a problem as the immunity of the mom is transferred via the milk in the first 24 hours

kitten weight should be closely monitored, if one is losing weight it may have an infection, motor skill problems can indicate a disease like the calicivirus
at 3 weeks they must be 300 grams of greater

however if the mom has been vacinnated and there are no other cats around then calici is unlikely

Also mite in the ears can affect balance

sorry, i'm instant messenging with him on msn

Well first thing is to take the kitten's temperature, anything over 102.5F indicates a possible infection Anything over 103.5 meants a vet should intervene

However, at 3 weeks this is normal so there may be nothing wrong.

At 4 weeks, kittens should have good balance and be able to walk and run in short bursts. The 'backwards way' of this kitten is a concern and a vet visit is th best idea for him. It's possible he may be blind and it's his way of not constantly bumping his face into things.

UPDATE...Eddie is now walking fine, I think he was just scared of absolutely everything and that was his defense..

He's actually the most intelligent of the litter!
Thanks for all your advice.
