The ssscat uses an infra-red motion detector to trigger a whistle and a spray of compressed air. Is that the kind of device you're looking for?

Ssscat sprays citronella and you can set it to sound and spray or sound only. Last night Abi tried to come into the dining rom while we were eating and she triggered the noise only. so she stayed in the living room and watched us eat from the top of the sofa. I find it to be highly effective and I dont have to be the one saying no or pushing her away.

Are you using it with something other than the ssscat refill? I didn't know you could do that. Where did you get it? Do you have any problems with the nozzle plugging? The standard ssscat refill is just plain (unscented) compressed "air", same as the computer duster sprays. The propellant is R134a, an inert refrigerant (kind of like "freon") widely used in aerosol sprays.

Citronella scent would certainly make it more abhorrent to a cat.

edit-> aha...I think I figured it out...I did some more research on their website and I see they have two other products called "SprayCommander" and "SprayBarrier" for use with dogs that have a citronella spray. Is that what you're using with the ssscat? I didn't know you could do that. (The standard ssscat refill is in a blue can, the SprayCommander/Barrier refill is in a yellow can)

I live in the No. Va area near DC.
There is another product for outdoor use - using high frequency sound targeted to cats hearing, and one that uses water. The water product is called scare cat or something and the sound
product is called cat stopper. I THINK. Let me see if I can find the links and post. I found them online...

But, as I said for outdoor use and not indoor...

it has three settings:
off
sound only
sound and citronella

once she gets zapped w the citronella the sound is enough to keep her away. then just the sight of the can. She triggered ot once while we were eating dinner but left the open archway to the dining room when she heard the sound (it's currently set for sound only)

I find it very effective and I dont have to be the enforcer, the battery operated motion detector can does all the work.
