Atreyu has a little, ok big habit of suckling me. He goes for my neck, my lips, my eyes, my chest... anything he can get his little mouth to. He has a habit of sucking on my shirts too. To the point that my shirt is soaking wet. He has even crawled down my shirt and done this to my stomach - where he then proceeded to fall asleep which was really cute. I am thinking he was taken from his mom too soon - he was 6 weeks old when I got him. Is this something I should break him of?? I took it as a sign that he is hungry and have bought some kitten formula that I give him when he is doing this but I don't want to encourage this if its gonna be a problem for him for the rest of his 9 lives. I have never had a kitten before, always got them when they were at least a few months old. He always purrs when he does this so I know it makes him happy and it doesn't really bother me. I just worry

Firstly 6 weeks old is way too young for him to be away from his mother and that is probably the reason he is suckling. Bijou suckled on my neck before settling down to sleep every night until just recently and now he just gives my neck a little lick before settling in for his nap so it seems he has outgrown the need. It's a comfort thing rather than a food thing. If it doesn't bother you I wouldn't worry about it. I rather enjoyed having Bijou suckle my neck - it made me feel special since he only ever did it to me.

PS - I love your kitty's name - are you a fan of Never Ending Story?

Surgis will be 3 in may and he still sucks on our ears when he needs comforting (he was found alone in the street at 5 weeks old). Spirit still sucks on the comforter while she cuddles and she just turned 4 (she was also 5 weeks when we got her).

My four year old cat who was adopted from the SPCA when she was about 1 1/2 years old suckles on our shirts...she kneads the spot where she is going to suckle before she actually does. We're not sure what her previous life was like or how old she was when she left her mother, but it probably was too soon for her.
