Same here. And of course, I blow the bacteria and cat hair off it! Except I thought it was a ten second rule....

With all of the animal people on this site, this should have been one of the choices. If it is something like turkey, I can guarantee that the cats have a hold of it before 2 seconds are up.

Aside from the 5-second rule, there's also "you gotta eat a peck of dirt before you die". My Mum never worried much about what nasties got in our mouths in the ordinary course of affairs, so the 5-second rule has always followed naturally from that. It does depend to some extent on what floor is involved though.

Eeeeewwww!!
I'd eat it only if the food was wrapped when I dropped it.

I voted for the last choice.
Oh come on, it's not that bad!
I did point out that the myth has been debunked. That may offer some enlightenment for people.
Otherwise, some of us have learned more clever excuses to continue this bad habit.

I think I've heard something similar years ago, but I like that saying.

If it fell on my floor i will eat it but i thought it was the 3 second rule. 10 seconds is way to long! at work i wont eat it if it touched the counter!!! or a table at a retaurant!!

Ya`ll TOTALLY missed the REAL point....and that`s that it depends on WHAT the food is!
Normally around here, it goes into the trash if it`s something that the cats won`t consume...but if it`s CHOCOLATE....well now, THAT`S A VERY DIFFERENT matter all together!!!!! (An "exception to the rule"....or "a cat of a different color")....and speaking of cats...pity the one that would try to get to it before ME!

I picked attempt to blow it off like it helps lol but it really depends. If i'm at home and i drop something i'll pick it up and look it over and eat. Now if i'm somewhere OTHER than my own home-- no way will i eat it. I'll simply just throw it away...even if its the last bite of the cheesecake!!!

If it doesn't have excess cat hair on it, I am good to go. This must be yet one more reason why I have a great immune system and rarely get sick.

I'm with you on this one. If it's dry I pick it up and eat it; wet and washable it's washed and cooked/eaten; wet and unwashable, in the garbage.

I've never been overly sticky about germs since growing up on a farm and cleaning the dirt off a raw carrot/turnip/radish on my jeans and eating it (this is the same dirt that manure was spread on a few months earlier. We've always been pretty healthy and rarely got sick.

it depends on what it is. if it's a dry food I'm more prone to eat it. and if it's at my house and I've cleaned recently I'll eat it. And if I'm drunk I'll probably eat it.

Yes!! Chocolate is exempt from the 5-second rule. I should know - I AM president of the SPCC. (SOciety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Chocolate.
