Hello everyone, I wanted to say hello and introduce myself and my kitties. I joined yesterday as a way to find information regarding a health issue with one of my cats and became so intrigued with the site, I joined and spent many more hours in here than I did working..
Fortunately, it isn't busy this time of year.
I have a kitten named Nutmeg, who is approximately 7 months old. She's from a litter who's parent's are feral. My room mate and I found 2 cats roaming outside our house, and since it was winter, we fed them and tried to get them in the house. We realized one was pregnant, so we continued to feed her and the other, whom we thought was the father of the unborn kittens. However, we had to move, and felt terrible about leaving them. No matter how hard we tried to catch them, it didn't work. At one point, the mother cat, disappeared for about a week or so. We believed this is when she had the kittens. We followed her as she did come back to us for food (she knew she had a good thing going with us), and found the kittens. It was in the basement of an old dilapitated house. We couldn't get to them. When moving day came, we told the new owner about the cats and hoped she would continue feeding them, but, she said she was allergic to cats. That pretty much told us, she wouldn't be feeding them. It was so hard to leave, knowing the cats would not find food at the house. It really tore us apart, but couldn't do anything.
We moved only a few blocks away, to new condo's, and would take walks in the area, in hopes we would find the cats and kittens. To our horror, the old house was being demolished for new construction. Again, the devastation was awful, not knowing what happened to them.
As luck would have it, we found them, hiding under a stoop at a townhouse, a block from where they were before and a block from where we lived now. It was so wonderful to see these little furry bundles of joy. There were four of them and the owner had been feeding them. BUT.. she was moving too. We had to work fast. One of the other neighboors decided to help us capture them and we decided who would take which kitten for a pet. We rented a live trap since the city's animal control didn't have any to spare, and one by one, we caught them. We even got the mother cat, who as it turns out, had 4 previous litters. The cats apparently have been around awhile and visited yet another house for food as well. This family has 2 generations of the cats litters. So, we pitched in, had the mother cat fixed, and let her go. She was too old to be domesticated, and we didn't want to seperate her from the dad cat. They've survived a long time, so we felt it best to let them be together. At least mamma wouldn't be having anymore litters.
I took one of the kittens, Nutmeg, my ex-room mate took 2, and the neighbor who helped us, took the last one. They are all healthy, and fixed. But since they were not caught until they were about 3 or 4 months old, it took awhile for them to come around and let us pet them or play with them. They hid a lot the first few weeks. However, they are all loving adorable cats now.
I ended up adopting another kitten to keep Nutmeg occupied. His name is Oreo. The two of them are buddies now, after experiencing some jealousies.
So, there's my story, sorry so long. As soon as I figure out how to post their pictures, I will.
Thank you and Happy New Year to all!!
