Witney has a problem with peeing--as I'm sure other cats do..she doesn't aim 'down' towards the sand, she just kinda stands and pees so the pee usually goes to the side of the litter and seeps out at the seams and would just make a mess after a while.
I bought her a new litter that I saw at Petco that was like a rubbermaid bucket with a cover and top-entry hole. This has made life so much better for me--they even sell liners specifically for that product. You can see it here:

I bought it on sale though so it's a lot cheaper than that.
If you're also near a wal-mart, if you go to their pet section, there are these great liners called 10 sifting. It's a liner for your litterbox that has 10 sheets...sheets 1-9 has holes while sheet 10 is solid. So to clean your litterbox you just have to lift one sheet at a time and throw it away...on the 10th one just pour the clean litter to a new sheet set. It helped me a ton as I didn't have to try to scoop out any of her stuff that would break while trying to scoop leaving me with little smelly pieces.
I hope this helps somebody...I know I found it absolutely disgusting when the litter area would get smelly and sickening because of my cat's inability to pee downard...and anything to make cleaning the litter is great
