My cat has her nest under the futon in the living room. She has her babies (a blue mouse toy and a white piggie toy) there as well. We even bought her a cat bed, but she won't use it. She'd rather sleep under the futon than on it.

The problem is, that the futon has been in the bed position since my knee injury in july so it would be easier for me to move about. Now that I'm back on my feet, I would like to put it back into couch position. I'm afraid of doing this and disrupting her little hiding and sleeping spot. In the couch position, she would have less room and it will be a little lower (i'm a little worried about her getting squished underneath as it is). Do you think it would be okay to do this? Or would it upset her if we bought a new couch and placed it there (i know this futon won't last forever)?

well you could try rubbing catnip on her bed so she'll use it, then move the bed to a place thats out of the way thats safer, cuz obviously she likes hiding away from the noise of everything, where she knows she wont be disturbed.

I tried putting the bed under our desk area and rubbed a little catnip on it... Let me say that she hasn't had any catnip fun in a couple of weeks. She went to explore the bed, walked around in it twice, sniffed, then ran mreowling through the house and attacking her toys with much fervor!
Guess she got her catnip fix even if she still won't use the bed!

If you don't mind your futon in the bed position, then leave it be. If it were me, I would pick up the cat, and the bed and her toys, put her in another room temporarily, shut the door. Put the futon back to rights, then let the cat out. She will find another hiding spot. If you don't have a cat condo, you might invest in one.

thanks hissy. we've been wanting to buy a cat condo, but they are so expensive!

I wanted to put it back into the regular position because it irritates my old back injury otherwise... (yes, i'm falling apart at 24!)

And, by the way, we really want to move the futon back into the regular position. The way it is now, I cannot reach Seth if I need to. I cannot squat down with the condition of my knees (don't know if when I'll be able to), so I'd like to be able to have easy access to her in case of emergency, if I need to take her in for vet visits, or to simply trim her nails if I need to.

Have you tried ebay?? I've heard of people getting great deals on cat condos at ebay.

Well, we put Seth in the bathroom for a few minutes last night and decided to put the futon back into couch position. After we got it all fixed up, we opened the door. She wandered out and was very stunned when she saw that it wasn't so easy for her to go and hide there when she felt like it. She bumped her head a few times trying to get under there to hide, but after that she realized that it wasn't really an ideal place to be.

So she spent most of the night on the windowsill and on her scratching box (one of those cat scratcher ones). I was pleased to just see her out and about instead of hiding. She's slept behind the couch last night (which is not against the wall, but faces the kitchen area) on one of my t-shirts.

This morning I did some yoga and a lot of relaxation techniques. Seth came up to me several times and gave me kisses. She then laid down and watched me. My last poses were floor poses, ending with Savasana (where you attempt to let go completely). I'm guessing Seth passed out during this time--right under the seat of the futon, stretched out on her back with her head sticking out from under there. Her cute little eyes were crossed, she got so comfy! I think she really liked me doing the poses. I think she really feels the effects of this!

She was probably responding to your relaxed state. They are so in tune with us that when we get stressed so do they. You can give her places to hide without a condo but for the money www.feline.furniture.com has got some really nice ones. They are also replaceable, so when they do start to show wear and tear you just order new parts! Plus, what I really like about them is after they are assembled you can pick them up and carry them upstairs or into another room with one hand.
