Hello! I just adopted a stray and I'm not sure if she's pregnant. We've had her (Maggie) about a month, and everything I can find on cats says that when they are at least three weeks pregnant thier nipples will get bigger, and they will start to show at about five weeks! She was already showing and her nipples were enlarged when we found her, it's been about five weeks and her belly seems to be getting smaller! She doesn't like her tummy touched, she cries alot, she just recently started sleeping in the box I put out for her, she gets on our bed when in the beginning she wouldn't even go in our room! She's also started pushing really hard and having the smallest bowl movements ever!! (I watch her because a previous cat had her first kitten in the litter box and I own a litter maid!!) I can't afford to take her to the vet! What do I look for other then the obvious?

She needs to see a vet. She may not be pregnant, but may be full of worms that need to be treated and she may be going into heat. Best thing to do is contact a local vet office and see if they will put you on a payment plan. This cat will also need to be spayed at some point whether she is pregnant or not...so that is something that you should consider.

I agree. She needs to see a vet. There is alwys the possibility that she may have been PG and something has happened to the kittens...and she may need some medical help.
She needs to be spayed anyhow....and some vets will take payments. Ask when you call if that is a possibility.
Please let us know the outcome...and best of everything to you and your new little girl.

My mother in law said she looks like she will have them any day now, and she should! If she hasn't had any kittens by the end of next week she is definately going to the vet!! I keep pondering the "worms", but if it is worms how do you explain her nipples? I just don't know anymore!!

Have you seen or felt any milk production?? Milk is produced 1-2 days before labor. Also...do you feel or see any kittens??

It's possible she may have had a litter previously.

So if she's had a litter before, he nipples could stay larger then before? She was snuggling with me right now and a worm crawled out of her bottom, so I looked it up, she has tapeworms! I'm going to go get her medicine tomorrow.

Yes her nipples can stay large for quite awhile after having a litter. Your cat must have a ton of worms! You can catch tapeworms too so be sure to get her some meds right away!
BTW-get your meds from the vet. I you try to do it yourself you might poision your cat, especially if she's full of worms. Causing them to die all at once can prove to be toxic to her system orcause a blockage in her intestines.
