I have a total of 3 cats, one is begining to become overweight, one is skinny and we're always trying to get him to eat more, and the other is ideal weight. How do I keep one well fed while trying to keep the other on a diet? Is there a type of food that is ideal for both?

Any "all life stages" food could work just fine.

If the fat cat is less of a climber, you may try putting extra food on top of the refrigerator or in a similar spot for the skinny guy.

You should also never put a cat on a diet without a vet telling you to. There are dangerous health issues that can come up when an obese cat is suddenly placed on a diet without a vet's okay. If you vet has been apprised he will recommend how to get the weight off slowly and avoid health issues

Luckily the fat cat isn't really fat but she's begining to become overweight. She's still a kitten so I know it's best to do something about it now before she becomes obese. The skinny cat has comprimised liver and kidney functioning and I'm waiting for the vet to tell me if I should put him on a special diet. He said that since he's still a kitten putting him on a diet for his liver and kidney could stunt his growth. If he does go on a special diet it's going to be hard for me to get them to eat seperatly since they free-feed now. Free feeding is the only way to keep Otis's weight up but unfortunatly it's making baby girl larger lol. I've tried to give only Otis wet food once a day which works pretty well except baby girl gets jealous :-/

Have you considered raw for you girls? This might be something to discuss with the vet as it shouldn't stunt your kittens growth and at the same time would probably be good for the liver and kidneys as its a pure diet for a feline.

I had gotten a cat (outdoor switched to indoor) and she suddenly started putting on the weight. Then I have 2 kittens who are growing like crazy. I put all my cats on raw and the extra weight melted off of Autumn and yet my kittens are getting everything they need to grow. It regulated weight extremely well.

If you are interested you might do some research and then bring it up with your vet. They may or may not like the idea. Some vets will put cats on this diet as a last attempt to save a cats life when liver and kidney problems occur. Not all vets like the idea though as they don't know much about it. Either way due to your compromised kitten make sure the vet knows before you make any diet changes.

What would be considered 'raw'? If you have any examples or could explain the diet you use (how often, how much) then I might have a better understanding and can bring it up to the vet
Thanks for the suggestions!

I feed raw chicken/turkey muscle meat w/ ground bone instead of kibble or wet food. It eliminates dental problems as it really works the teeth and gums. It needs a lot of research to make sure you make the proportions right (its better to start with a preprepared raw diet - available based on your location). I feed 100% raw meat but some people add some vegetables (my cats refuse veggies which is ok). Some people also feed rabbit. I keep about 8 pounds frozen and thaw about a pound a day. My 3 cats eat about a pound each day (total, 1/3 individually). I split it up into 2 meals. Its the closest thing to a real diet for felines (ie the mouse is the perfect meal...). I have some info up on my site:

The diet is called BARF or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (for cats or dogs). You can search that term on google for more articles on the topic.
