Hi, recently I have started feeding a feral cat visitor to our home. i have only seen him once, and that was for a split second before he noticed me and ran. I have kept putting food out for him, and everyday it is gone. This has been going on for approx. 3 weeks. Last night at 3 am. my boyfriend and I awoke to loud meows, hissing, screaming and then a cat fight. at first we thought it was our two kitties, but they were both snoozing on the couch when i got up to look. i noticed the noise comming from outside, opened the window and got a flashlight for a better look, but they (?) busted out of my yard once they heard the window opening. This morning i searched around the yard for any bloody evidence (the fight sounded quite intense). No blood or cats, just paw prints and tosseld snow where they were. i'm quite upset because we thought we only had one cat, but obviously we're getting more visitors due to putting food out for them. like i mentioned before, we have not yet seen the cats. I'm wondering if i should put out traps for them? our vet has offered us a discount for the spay/neutering of them. he does not have any traps for us, though. i may sound naive, but do we buy the traps, or rent them from the humane society? we have no intent of bringing the cats to the humane society though. just get them fixed and cleaned up and let them back out by our house. i'm having quite a dilema about this. my boyfriend wants me to just stop feeding them. i'm not quite sure what to do. with the holiday season, funds are low...but i don't want to wait a few weeks to trap them and find them dead or injured on my lawn. should i stop feeding them for a few weeks until i have the money? any advice would be much appreciated...thank you!

This is what happens when you set food out. You attract more cats, because they will converge on the food. If you have intact males you have alpha wars, which is what you probably heard. Chances are good that you have a wounded cat in your area now if the fighting was that loud, though sometimes it is all bluff and no weapons. But it would be best if you could set out traps.

I have traps I loan out, but other than that there are feed stores, pet stores, animal shelters, even pounds that will loan you a trap. Most require a deposit that you get back when you return the trap. Before you set it out, be sure and scrub it good with hot water and liquid soap, let it dry then spray some rags with Feliway Spray. Put the rags under the food in the trap, once the cat goes in and becomes trapped, the spray if not dissapated will help to calm him down.

I would recommend you try to work with a TNR group on trapping/neutering these cats. Here is a list for Canada of groups that TNR:

Awesome, thank you for the quick advice! through your link i found a group right here in Niagara that looks very helpful. Niagara Action for Animals. I'm going to give them a call in a few minutes and see about getting those traps and the spray you were mentioning...I hope we can catch them quickly and give them a much needed Christmas present of good health! I called my mother about the financial situation of them and she has offered to pay upfront and I'll pay her back next paycheck. =D I hope this works out...

Just a tip- as swamped as these rescue groups are, sometimes they respond quicker when a donation is offered if they will help you.

Good luck and thanks for caring for the forgotten-
