Hi
I have two girl cats Pheobe and Sophie they are eight months old and haven't been spayed yet, as i only adopted them about one month ago, they don't go out yet because they haven't been spayed, however about three weeks ago Pheobe got out and was out for thirteen hours before we found her. I just wanted to know if shes likely to be pregnant and if there are any signs i should look out for? Its not a problem if she is i would just like to be prepared! Thanks.

Emma...it is too early to see any signs. Please take her to your vet...the vet can look her over and tell you whether he/she believes that she is pregnant. Since you do not know for sure that she is indeed pregnant, you can still have her spayed. You should also arrange to have Sophie spayed so that she doesn't become pregnant. It will be critical to insure that both cats remain indoors only (with no opportunity to get outdoors) until both have been spayed.

she has been in heat on and off for a while now but not sure if she was when she got out! Tryed to get her a check up at the vets but theres no appointments until after christmas. They were both due to be spayed in the new year.

Cats are induced ovulators, which means it is not necessary for them to be in estrus to become pregnant. If your unspayed female got outside AND encountered an intact male who successfully mated with her, then the chances are extremely high that she is pregnant.

Emma....definately keep your appointment for Sophie and when you take in Phoebe you can tell the vet that she was out for 13 hours and you are concerned that she may be pregnant. Given that this happened several weeks ago, the vet may be able to tell you whether she is indeed pregnant. For now...do not let either cat have access outdoors. You can also read this post:

She could be pregnant but it is too early to easily tell. The best thing to do is keep the appointment to have them spayed.

Her nipples are pink and do stick out a bit and feel a little hard but i'm not sure what they were like before, i never really checked.

Emma....I respect your wishes not to spay Pheobe until you know whether she is pregnant or not...but now you must insure that she has no other opportunities to get outdoors. If she is pregnant, it will also be your responsibility to insure that her kittens go into good homes where they will be spayed/neutered and to insure that Pheobe is spayed once the kittens are weaned. You may want to ask your vet at the time of spaying Sophie whether there is a clinic that will spay Pheobe's kittens before they reach 6 months of age and request a copy of the spay/neuter certificate from the adoptive parents. Please let us know the results from your vet visit.
