Apparently in my home state at the moment there are problems with feral cats killing native wildlife. I heard they were going to have a cat bounty from a friend who is not exactly a cat "lover" (however we keep our opinons to ourselves), he also told me they are going to be coming into our home streets and killing our pets wether they are allowed to or not, wearing collars or not and are not in the least feral. This makes me angry and very upset. If it happens it most likely will NOT be done by professionals, just amaturs who want the money, which is why our pets could be at risk. Now I am against the killing of any kind of cat, i couldnt care less who is doing it. But to think that somebody could come into my home, into my yard, and kill my babies in the most inhumane and unfair way possible, makes my blood boil, it brings me to tears just to think about it. The same thing goes for the feral cats, yes, it is people's fault that these things happen, people who dont fix their cats, but this is certainly not the answer.

The RSPCA is fighting against it, but the councils are all for it! they will be offering $5 per cat, and they say they are getting rid of the problem in the most humane way!!

It just makes me sick! I know I am going to fight it!

Shimmer....I would contact the RSPCA and see what you can do to help. Also, see if there are any TNR groups in your area that you can volunteer with.

You could contact every news agency possible to do reports on this atrocity and let people know there are humane alternatives, such as TNR. You could also find out which council members are in support of this cruel idea. Then you could write them to say that you will not vote for them in the future for any office and that you will make sure everyone knows that they supported the cruel and senseless practice of cat genocide.

Australia has a very bad feral cat problem, and one of the biggest problems is the attitude that people have toward these cats. They actually did a study of the predatory habits of the feral cats, to determine how many birds they kill, by examining the stomach contents of randomly killed cats. Nice, huh? Nothing like judging them guilty to get the evidence.

There needs to be a LOT of education in many parts of Australia (as in many parts of the world!) about how killing the cats is not a viable method of controlling the population.

Thanks for all your advice guys. I am afraid that with the town being so small, and my mistrust with the people in it, a petition would not do the trick. The mayor here happens to be my best friends uncle, who is not exactly excited with cats, but doesnt hate one, in fact, he owns one. I will wait untill I here for sure that they are bringing this in, and I WILL find out before its too late. To me it sounds as if they are going to try to keep this a secret, not if I am around! If they go ahead, I will contact the RSPCA, I will contact newspapers, and a tv show we have here in australia called "Today Tonight" which address the latest issues of the publics lives. They would surely want to hear my story. And for the council, they will get what is coming to them!

sorry but what is TNR?

Please do not wait. It is easier to head off such a plan by getting the word out early. Write anonymous letters to the mayor and the local paper if you don't want to tip your hand too early. Let them know that there are people who will not allow for this.

Check the Alley Cat Allies website for facts to back up the claim that neutering and releasing the cats provides better control than killing them. Start educating people about this issue, and bring it to light.
