fostering ferel kittens

Thread Starter
I'm going to be fostering 3 maybe 4 ferel kittens for my local shelter. I've been fostering for the shelter for awhile now, but this is my first time with ferels. A guy has trapped 3 out of the 4 in a litter and is currently trying to catch the fourth. So the shelter called me last night and you no I just couldn't say no. Any suggestions or tips you can give me on how to go about this would be great. Thanks.

Fostering feral babies is one of the most rewarding things. How old are they? Set up a room with a few boxes on their sides and draped with a towel or blanket, so they're like little caves. Play classical music all the time down really low. Resist the temptation to reach out and cuddle them. Spend lots of time sitting or lying on the floor of their room, talking softly or reading to them. Avoid eye contact, as they'll see this as a threat initially. If they have been outside, they won't recognise a litter tray. Buy soil from a gardening place (not outside, it can contain bugs) and put this in the litter tray. Slowly add kitty litter until they are using straight kitty litter. The toys that you'd normally expect kittens to play with may frighten them as they're not used to them.

They'll probably appreciate some rice sock heaters. 3/4 fill a sock with white uncooked rice. Tie a knot or hand-sew the top. Stick it in the microwave until the sock is nicely warm (not too hot of course).

Always move slowly around them and tell them what you are going to do before you do it.

Patience is the key - it will take time but they'll slowly become socialised. Good luck. Please keep us updated on their progress.
