Putzi didn't wake up this morning. She, fully grown, showed up at our front door in February of 1987, in a snowstorm, and lived with us for about six weeks. She got along fine with our resident cat, but didn't like our dog, and attacked him repeatedly. Our neighbor, Mrs. R., had just been widowed, and had always wanted a cat, so she offered to take her. Over the years, she repeatedly told me that she didn't know what she'd do without Putzi. For the past several months, Putzi has done little but eat, sleep, and use her litter box, though she visited us three times last week. I now think she was saying farewell.
Just a few weeks ago, a cat that looks just like Putzi showed up at our door, also when it was snowing. I managed to locate her owners, who weren't interested in having her back, so Miezi went to Mrs. R.. Yesterday, Mrs. R. was out clearing snow, and Miezi was "helping" her, just like Putzi used to. My husband commented on how the two were almost indistinguishable, also in behavior.
RIP, Putzi. You were a wonderful, affectionate cat, and I think you loved your mom so much that you somehow saw to it that she would get over your loss. Did you lead Miezi to her? Even your names are similar. Say hello to Fritz, Pirate, Mitzi, Pussy Willow and Straycat for me.

Putzi sure sounds like a very special kitty, who touched many lives. She sounds like she was one of those "fate" cats, whose purpose was larger than her little body could contain.

My heart is with all of those whose lives were touched by Putzi, including little Mietzi.

Wow, what a great story! Makes you wonder! I'm glad Putzi had so many that loved her, and somecat to follow in her paw prints!

Aw, how very sweet. What a lovely neighbor you have. Condolences to you both on the loss of Putzi. I am very happy that Mrs. R. has a new kitty to help comfort her at this time.

Rest in peace, Putzi!!

Putzi sounds like he was a amazing cat. I'm really sorry for your loss, but maybe a new Putzi will arrive on your doorstep during a snowstorm again someday, you never know.

RIP Putzi, the truly amazing cat!

What a great story. It seems that Putzi did indeed show Miezi where she needed to go.

Thank you for your kind words. It looks to me like Miezi is going to be a permanent part of Mrs. R.'s life, and that ZsaZsa, who we've been sharing, is also going to move in with her on a permanent basis (ZsaZsa loves Miezi). I'm glad, because she's very much an "animal person".
It's very ironic that Putzi appeared out of nowhere in a heavy snowstorm, and also departed in one. Snow will probably always remind us of her.

I'm so sorry. Putzi was a very special cat. I'm so glad Putzi sent a special gift to your neighbor in the form of Miezi.
