Hi, our cat catdog is about 6 mo old. We also have his 2 sisters. He is playful, active & the craziest of all 3 but we try not to pet him too much because when he purrs, he starts having trouble with his throat and coughs.
He is actually our favorite and hate to see him go through this but I have given him so much hairball remedy & tuna oil that I don't believe he could possibly have a hairball. This only happens when he purrs, any ideas?

I would take your cat to the vet. In order to purr, there is a set of false vocal chords behind the real one, when the cat breathes in deeply, the sound that issues forth is a purr. It is possible that your cat has somehow swallowed something obstructing this second passage, that is why he is coughing

Yes, that is what I thought, that is what it sounds like, I was just hoping maybe somebody had experienced the same thing & had a simple solution.
He is due to be neutered anyway, I am sure they could do both at the same time, I can't imagine getting down a cats throat w/o sedation.
Thank you so much for your reply.

Well, if there's something stuck in the throat, I think you want that checked out right away.

I agree. It's vet time.
