I just have to write this. We have thick snow on the ground, it has been falling for two days, and the sound of dogs barking has been getting worse. Now there are three street dogs (I won't call them ferals because some of them are dumped pets) in the field by the house. It seems we are a natural target up on this hill for those who want to get rid of their dogs. But how can people do it at this time of year? There is no Christmas here, but it is cold, dark and the dogs look so miserable. The only thing for anyone to do is call animal control, who, if they can catch them, put them down at once. I don't want to feed them or encourage them to hang round my gate, because of the cats. And my friend Vicki, who rescues stray dogs, has five at the moment and no foster homes for any others. Many of them are not socialisable anyway. It is so sad.

Oh the poor doggies
...how about putting a paper bowl of food for them a little ways from your house for now? That would be a nice Christmas present for them. But isn't there an animal rescue group or something around where you live, or no? Maybe you should search around for somebody you could call who could, at the least, bring them to a nice warm shelter or something. I see that you care, and that is very nice.

Jenny....given that the cat site is primarily about cat issues and this section is about feral and stray cats:

Are you one of the many who takes care of a colony of feral cats? Or have you found a stray cat or kitten who is hiding from you right now? Are you unsure how to gain this cat's trust? Come and meet others who will help guide your way.

you may want to post this over on the Petfinder forum.

I know it's about cats and I'm a cat person. But I was just so sad and people sometimes put something about dogs on different threads. There is no help here in Bosnia, no cat or dog shelters and basically nothing anyone can do.

Jenny, your post is a good one because homeless dogs kill cats & other dogs, in this case, as a matter of survival. If you could provide a shelter and food, that might buy some time for another person to come along and help out. Other than that, even PTS by animal control is more merciful - esp. if the dogs are not neutered. A stray dog having puppies among homeless dogs is a beyond-hideous experience - she can be horribly killed while trying to protect her doomed young. Those poor, poor dogs!
I will pray that you get some good answers very, very soon, as those dogs can quickly become a threat to cats, other small animals, and yes, very young & elderly humans. God Bless you for caring!!!

I would call animal control. Loose dogs are so different than feral cats. Loose dogs, even if they were tame once, will often become a pack and will hunt. That means they will hunt your cats, or even neighbor kids.

Feral cats do not generally become a health or safety issue, even when there are a large number of them. But no matter how much you love dogs, you do not want them running wild. If you want to start feeding them, you need to contain them in a fence or something so they won't hurt anyone or anything.

How nice that your friend is rescuing some of the strays. But it is easy to get overloaded with the number of animals dumped. Best of luck to you in this situation.
