Hey everybody,
I was wondering what your opinions on getting a second cat. I know a lot of you have at least 2 and this makes sense to me as the cats can play with each other. On the other hand people mention "one cat cats". My cat is only 7 months old but I've only had her for 2 months. She was not handled at all before I got her so she is a very shy/passive kitten. She is pretty much acting like a normal cat (curious, playful) now but only when I'm the only one around.

I guess my question is, do you think getting a second cat at this stage would be a bad idea? Should I wait till my cat is completely comfortable or should I not let her get settled into a one cat house?

Merry Christmas,
SpaceCat

she's young enough she'll probably adapt to a 2nd cat pretty well. the cat i had that was really an 'only' cat was just that for several years - i think that's why she had so much trouble accepting another. Cable was about 8 months old when Java came to us, a 3 1/2 month old kitten & they got along great from day 1. but Cable had never been an only cat - she joined us when Mouse was still alive, so i had 2 other 7 year old cats. you should check out this thread. Sleeves is about the age of your kitten.

I tend to find that if a shy cat is introduced to an outgoing cat, the shy one will come around more quickly. My Timmy is very shy, as he was a feral that I rescued. Whan I bend down to softly call to him and reach my arm out, he stays put but all my other ones come running to me for attention. Only then will he tiptoe up to me and let me touch him. Also, my cat Smudge was pretty much a loner, she never liked to sleep with the others or anything. Until I got Elessar, and for some reason he thought Smudge was his mom and would snuggle up to her, no matter how much she growled. He'd just shimmy up and roll over on his back. He won her over and after that she loved him. I recommend getting a new cat whenever you feel you'd like to.

I always thought Twitch was fine being an only cat, but now that Lily is here, I can deifnately see she is much happier. Twitch being an obnoxious brat(lol
) helped to make Lily into one. Lily was shy at first, but came around quickly. They are now the best of friends & I cannot imagine life without two cats. If only I could convince mom & dad that three cats aren't any more work than one....
Like that'll happen!

Getting a second cat was the best decision we ever made, for a lot of reasons. Our first cat now has a playmate (although he does play too rough for her sometimes!!) and we found our 2nd cat as a stray so we did good all around!

i think getting another cat would be a good choice. it may even help your kitten become more adjusted. cats communicate like people cannot. dont forget to look on this forum for how to introduce cats coz i think it really helped mine!! do you know what organization you are looking at adopting a cat from?
i live in ca, and some good organizations are: Humanimal Connection and Homeless cat network....
