Hi, this is my first time here. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. My oldest cat is 5 years old and my youngest is 1 1/2 yr. old. I have had a problem lately with my oldest cat darting out the door the minute it is open. He runs outside to eat the grass. He doesn't try to run away, he just nibbles on some grass until I can catch him. I am afraid he might sneak out without being seen and accidentally get run over or lost. Also, I go in and out alot to take my dogs outside to use the bathroom and this makes it tempting and easy for him to get out. Is there anything I can do to stop him from doing this?

Thanks for all replies.

Indoor grass is a wonderful idea. How do you do that?
Also, maybe quick put him in the bathroom before you take the dogs out?A pain,I know, but better than having something happen to him.
Another thought.....what if you got your cat used to a collar/leash and just put a leash on the cat before you open the door for the dogs and the cat can nibble on grass safely while the dogs are doing their business? Good Luck

Smokiethecat, I have seen cat grass for sale at places like petco. I also recently went to Fred Meyers and they had cat grass chia pets. Maybe you could ask Santa for one for Christmas

Be sure to read the label on the chia pets -- I know they used to be made in Mexico of material that contained lead, so they were not safe to use for anything edible, or even in a home where they might be licked by children or pets. I would hope that this is no longer the case, especially if they're being promoted for catgrass purposes... but you'll want to make sure...

Pet grass is a great idea, but make sure you put it in a heavy container. When we got pet grass for Jack we kept it in the wood container it came in (bad idea
) and he would knock it over and drag the dirt across the floor. What a mess!

If you can grow the gass in something heavy, like a terracotta pot with a wide bottom, it'll save you a lot of vaccuuming in the long run

HTH!

I always put my foot up when opening the doors if I don't want the cats out.
But they are quick!!!

We have the same ordeal with our cat Abbigail. We have a puppy, Alexis, who goes in/out as well. Our cat loves to walk around and explore and eat grass outside as well, or roll in the dirt! I usually try to make a habit of shutting the door after letting our puppy out and if I leave it open always checking to see where Abbigail is. Abbigail is 16 and seems to understand a lot of words so I usually tell her not to go outside if I dont' want her to and she won't...but I know you can't always trust they will do what you say!
Indoor grass would probaby be great! And having times (maybe when you are doing yardwork?) that she can go outside with you and explore, eat grass, etc.

I have the same problem with Rusty trying to run out the doors. All my cats have collars with bells (and ID) on them. So whether I'm letting the dogs out the back door or someone is going out the front, if we hear a bell, we know to grab the cat before we open the door.

If he's craving grass (and wait for him to then throw it up - they do that) he might have a tummy problem, so I'd think about what he's been eating and why he needs 'salad' to clear himself up.

Our Angel sneaks out too. 2 nights ago she got out when I let the dog in. It was about 1 degree F. outside and all snow and ice so she turned around and made a run back to the door right away. Maybe she will stop sneaking out for a while now lol. She had this shocked look on her face like dam its cold out there!!!!!!!!
