Harley was just at the vet for his neuter, and I was looking thru his papers when we got home, and he weighs 9.30 pounds. He's not fat by all means, but he's only 6 months old! The vet didn't say anything about him being over weight or anything, and he's a very, VERY active kitten!

Is there an 'average' or normal weight that most 6 month old kittens usually are? I just thought that 9lbs seemed kind of a lot! Maybe I'm wrong tho!

If their belly hangs below the ribs thats the biggest way to tell. Males can get pretty heavy. My aunt got a male kitten the same I got Meeka (same age). Hers always was 2-3 pounds heavier than my girl. 9.3 sounds like a lot. If he is healthy then he's well on his way to being a big boned cat. You should be able to take your hands and place them on either side of the body and run down the torso without your hands getting any wider apart. Its hard to tell, I'm battling with whether I think Autumn is too thin. The problem is I saw her when she was getting quite chubby! And now I think she is normal after the diet change.

You can't help but wonder though when you want the best for your cats.

In the little siggy, Shenandoah and Humble are both a wee bit bigger than they are now. Both weigh 13.5. The vet says it is ok but for them NOT to get bigger. It is hard, for they are totally indoor cats and are neutered. I measuer out their food and do the best I can.

He doesn't widen out when I run my hands down the side of his torso, he's just so long and lean! He just looks wide when he lays down, haha!

I fill his bowl up with food in the morning and it lasts him all day, so its not like he eats a lot! Occassionally I'll give him some chicken or something, but other than that, he's a good steady eater.

From what you are saying he sounds like he has a good weight for his body type.

When you go to the link Sharkey supplied that can give you the guideline you are looking for while he is growing.

I checked out the website from Sharkey-looks like he's 5, Ideal!

I just thought it seemed like an awfully high weight for a 6 month old!

I go more of what type of body/build the cat is for proper weight. You don't want ribs showing and you don't want a lot of fat. They should feel solid but not fat.

A smaller build cat (like oriental type) would average about 6/7 lbs - 10-12 lbs on this type of cat would be very overweight.

A medium build cat (american sh) would go the 10-12 lbs - if he weighed 15/16 lbs he'd be fat.

A large built cat (maine coon) would go 15 lbs average - 20 lbs would be fat.

So it depends on the body build of your cat as to the proper weight.

I'd be concerned about the shape of the cat, rather than focusing on the weight. Harley doesn't have baggy belly or wide bits, and he's active, so he sounds just fine.
