Ok, I know there are many good things about doing a team project... but all I have to say by now is...

I've been working on a team project all semester and it's been really frustrating. Problem is, I HATE being at the last minute, and my teammates don't seem to mind at all. Also, when someone tells me to meet them at 10am, to me it means that I'll be there at 9:50am... NOT 10:30!!!

Seems like whenever we met, everyone else would come late. Just last week, our plan was for two of my teammates to meet at 9am but since I didn't have to be there at the beginning, so I would come later. I showed up at 9:30 just in case they were having problems with the computer... and guess what... neither of them was there yet!!! We had a very limited amount of time in the computer lab and they just wasted half an hour of it

Most of the preparation for our project was done in class.... but that's really hard to do when people just don't show up for class. I can understand missing a class here and there... but missing half of them??? I really don't understand what goes on in peoples minds!

Now tomorow is when our final report is due. Most of the grade for that is for the individual component but we also have a team component. Everything is done but we need to put it all together. I have half the stuff and another girl has the other half. I emailed her two days ago so we could meet and I can give her my half... and she hasn't replied yet!

Been there, done that.
I understand the *concept* of doing team projects in college, but it never works. If it doesn't come together the way it should, be sure to talk to your professor about what happened with your Team, so that hopefully you can at least get credit for what you tried to do.

Good luck!

actually, it's a small class and the prof has been very involved in helping people so he knows who has been doing their work / showing up for class, etc.

If I don't hear from that girl today or tomorow morning, I'll just go talk to the prof, hand in my individual paper and explain why the group part is late

Totally agree...and that was smart of you to start showing up later. I've been through that whole *teamwork* ordeal. It's terrible because I also always got teamed up with people that didn't care about time or the project itself.

All I can say is that it does get better out in the real world...as the people you will work with care about the company/promotion/upcoming review and will work together. Plus if you work in the small-medium business it's easier to hunt them down and pester them. LOL.

Did you attempt to talk with the professor at all to see if you could get reassigned? This is always an option, as some people just do not work together that well. Plus from the way you talk, sounds like they're mooching off of you for a good grade.

Yeah. The worst grade I ever got in college was on a team project. I was a straight A student, and my partner was getting all F's. So we both ended up with a C.

I always felt like I was doing all the work when I worked with other people. They would write something that didn't even resemble English, and then ask me to "edit" it. Or they would scribble 2 or 3 wrong answers on a math paper and then ask me to "help" with it.

I started charging $10 an hour for tutoring, and got paid plenty.

well, I guess it's not too bad because things always end up getting done (so far) but always at the last minute.

My teammates do seem to care about the project, but some of them lack some maturity and work ethic. One of them actually missed many classes because she overslept (the class was at 1pm
)

It could have been worse. And the kind of project we were doing really needs to be a team project. But people need to grow up and be more considerate when other students are depending on them!

Also, are you going back for your Associates/Bachelors/Masters? Cause if its the first two, consider the age range. These kids are out of their parents nest for the first time, staying out late, etc. I know its no excuse, but I'm back in school 3 years after getting my 4 year degree. Going back I have a little more regard to my education at a later age then I did when I was 19 or 20...when I skipped classes, slept in, partied, drank. I still managed to get good grades, and once all the above became old (or regular) I managed my time better and focused a little more on school.

Yes, I think that's really what the problem is. The two team members I'm having the most problems with are in their first year of University (but not right out of high school... the education system here is different... you're in high school until grade 11 and then you do 2 years of CEGEP (kind of like college) before entering university). Anyways, they are new to university.
As for me, I've already done 5 years of university, worked full time for 3 years and now I'm back. So I guess there's a big difference. Plus I've spent a whole year working a boring job to save up as much money as I could to be able to go back to school. That might be why I take things more at heart.
Most of the people in the class were actually upper year honours students (a few grad students too) but none of them in my team
