My older cat, Max (2.5 years), and my younger cat, Milo (2 years), are both neutered males. Max outweighs Milo by two lbs.

They like to play chase and wrestle. Usually it's quite benign. But every so often, Max is a little too riled up and will try to pin Milo down by biting his neck, at which point Milo yelps in pain. I then have to put him on time out in the bathroom otherwise he'll keep doing it.

Is there any way I can prevent this from happening in the first place?

Thanks

In my experience, I kind of know when things are going to get out of hand so I step in and calm them a bit. I notice that the aggressor's hair starts to stand up and the "victim" acts like it isn't fun anymore. When I calm them a bit, they either continue playing (but less roughly) or just stop and go their separate ways.
