Chloe was spayed recently, our usual vet was away the the vet did it mid line (in the uk spays are usually done on the side) I have never had a cat spayed like that before and she has quite a lot of swelling round the scar, when the vet took out her stiches, she said the swelling was fluid and drained some off and she has got to go back if it has not gone down by Friday. What I really want to know , is this normal and has anyone had this?

Generally, in my experience on a spay there are small lumps that surround the incision, the reaction of the body to the sutures. If the lumps get larger than a golf ball, then I would worry and take the cat back for a recheck. Generally the lumps fade, I have never heard of any fluid filled

Hi,
Thanks, the vet said the the usaul lumps are just bruising from the op. not the fluid that Chloe has. She is going back Friday anyway.

I was going to say my Maggie had a big lump around her incision. Over the phone the vet said it was normal, but when I took her to have the stitches removed they said it was a reaction to the internal stitches & that it might take 6 months to go away. However, I got luck because it was gone about 48 hours later so I'm guessing it was a reaction to the external stitches.

Hi,

Just to let you all know I took Chloe back to the vet today, she has still got her lump. The vet said it is fluid, not a hernia and that it should re-absorb. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve got to keep an eye on it and take her back if it gets any bigger. She said she could put a drain in it, but that would mean sedating Chloe again and she didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t think it was bad enough to need that. She said to give it another two weeks.

Thanks again for the support

Anne if it's any help Sophie had a lump beside her incision, and the way i described it was that it felt like a nodule.

I remember MA(Hissy) telling me that lumps were normal after an op and not to worry uless it was golf ball size, which this wasn't.

The lump did eventually go away but it was about 2 weeks after Sophies spay.

Dax developed a lump the size of an egg after her spay!

It felt a bit like a really soft boiled egg under her skin.
Our vet said it sometimes happens and it would go down over time(which it did) although I can still feel some slight bumpiness where the incision was.
Don't be afraid to keep asking your vet if you are not sure
