I just read this, I am sorry he's been ill, but glad to hear he's improving. I hope after this he is boringly healthy for many years to come!

Last night my fiance's son and a friend were playing in the house. Brody started playing with them and he was having so much fun and had been doing so well for a couple of days I thought it would be ok for him to play..... I have been keeping him as mellow as I can since I found out he was sick, and especially since the flu/ kennel cough diagnosis. But he looked so happy I thought one night of playing wouldn't hurt.

Well I have ben up for the past hour holding Brody as he coughs and vomits.
I don't know what to give him to help his tummy settle. He made it 2 days without vomiting and I know I let him over do it last night.

Aw, poor sweetie! And poor Mum, too!
You feel like such a meany when you make them take it easy, don't you? Makes it hard to know just how far you can let them go without overdoing. Hope he's feeling better soon.

The growing pains of being a new Mom. As time goes on, you will get it figured out. He is so lucky to be in loving hands now. Poor little guy, all of this could have been prevented with proper care
. It is just heartbreaking that he has to go through this, and that you have to go through it with him.

Hugs to you and little Brody. I hope he is feeling better now!

Thanks Danielle! I have gotten a bit behind updating Brody's thread.

He has been doing wonderfully since my last post.
He is eating now.. I actually learned that he refuses to eat from his dish, but if I dump the dry food onto the floor he gobbles it up. It has been 5 days since his last vomiting episode and his energy level has increased. I am starting him on a new antibiotic today. He is still on the cough supressant but on Monday I am going to try letting him go without it. We saw the vet yesterday and he thinks he is definately getting past whatever it is that he had. We should be able to begin work on the heartworms in a couple of weeks.

what wonderful positive news
I am so glad to hear that it seems things are improving and the vet is happy with his progress

Merry Christmas to you all Tanya - I hope he continues to improve throughout this holiday period - what a wonderful gift that would be

Wonderful, Tanya! I also notice that he has really wormed his way into your heart over the past few weeks.
He may not like his dish. We had a dog (a pound puppy) who wouldn't eat from a dish at all, although we tried several different ones. My mother-in-law, who has very little experience with dogs, thought that he was such an "enthusiastic eater" that he was disturbed by the bowl always moving, and gave us an old cast iron pot to try. He ate from that pot for the next ten years.

Thank you so much Danielle

Brody did not vomit once over the holiday weekend. He almost made it through yesterday without his cough supressant. He started coughing a bit late in the evening so I went ahead and gave it to him. He ends up vomiting from the cough and I didn't want him to go through that again.
Brody had a very good Christmas complete with a stocking and gifts under the tree. One of the fun things I found with a dog is that they can actually open their own presents!
He enjoyed his gifts, especially the ones with squeekers in them. A friend told me that if a dog toy lasts more than a couple of days it isn't any good. I think that might be true and wonder is Brody's will hold up to his rough play much longer.

Tricia, I found that I can get Brody to eat from a plate. I like your idea about the pot though, and wonder if it would work with him. I would like to have my plate back and we have an old shallow pot in the cubbard. I will have to give it a try.

I brought him for a walk last night around the block. He did extremely well. This is good for 2 reasons.... The first it means we have come a long way in the leash training and the second is that he made it all the way around without becomming extremely worn out.

I think we are going to be in good shape to start the heartworm treatment next week

Hey guys!

Brody is still doing well. He did vomit yesterday afternoon. I was worried at first this was a set back, but he was riding in the car when it happened and I thought he could have just been car sick
He loves the car and has never been car sick before though. We were also on our way back from walking on a nature trail at a nearby park, so I was also thinking it could have just been a combination of all of the activity of the afternoon.
I will be calling the vets office Monday to schedule him to spend the day for the heartworm treatment. I will definately keep you all updated, and I will probably be a nervous wreck the day he spends there as well.
I am not looking forward to it but I know it has to be done.

On a brighter note his training is going very well. We have made much inprovement on the housebreaking. He has actually had only 2 "accidents" in the past couple of weeks and I don't think I can really call them "accidents" because I think he was actually marking. I will be discussing with the vet how he feels about going through with the neutering. He wanted to make the decision after Brody had recovered from the kennel cough/ flu. As I mentioned before, he is at higher risk during the procedure because of the heartworms and that is why it is questionable as to whether or not I will go through with it now or wait until the heartworm treatment is complete.
