I had to make the painful choice we all hate to make...

I took Oliver to the vet on Saturday the 10th. The vet said his temp was about 94 and was severely dehydrated. Since they couldn't do anything for him on the weekend, he suggested I take him to the Animal Emergency room. They put him on an IV and in a warm cage to bring his temp up. Sunday night, he is stabilized and I'm able to bring him home. This morning, I go down to the basement and he is hiding. When I find him, he starts crying out. Maybe he was just having a reaction to the antibiotics I was giving him. This evening, I go down to clip his claws and I find him laying on the ground. As I go to pet him, he lets out a cry that I will never forget. I go grab a box with some towels and wrap him up and head back to the emergency room. His temp was now about 90 and his heartbeat was about 50. The vet was pretty perplexed and said it most likely was kidney failure. They were so understanding. They let me stay with him to say goodbye and then after it was done, let me take as much time as I needed.

I'm having him cremated tomorrow. He was about 7 1/2 and I had him for about 4 years.

I really didn't think I would be writing in the forum for awhile, but, you never know, do ya?.....

I am so sorry...How absolutly heartbreaking
..

I can't even begin to imagine what you must be going through..Including all the ups and downs w/ olivers health before he finally passed away....

But just know Oliver knew how lucky he was to have someone like you to care for him in his times of happiness and hardships....

And also know he is happy, healthy andloved over the bridge....

RIP Oliver

Oh no! I'm so incredibly sorry you lost precious Oliver. You were faced with such a painful decision, and showed Oliver the ultimate love. You unselfishly put your feelings aside and gave your little boy freedom to live in perfect health. Oliver is so happy now in Heaven, and you will one day be reunited.
May God give you peace in your heart during this incredibly painful time.

I am so, so sorry for your sudden loss. RIP Oliver.
Next time you see a rainbow, look for that extra bit of orange in its colors. You'll know that's Oliver smiling down on you

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss! What a difficult decision to make, even when we know it is for the best. Oliver is whole and well now, over the Rainbow Bridge, bragging about how very much he was loved.

May your sweet memories be a comfort to you at this difficult time!

Condolences on your sad loss of Oliver! What a shock to lose your darling orange kitty at such a young age - the prime of life. You made a courageous decision, to let Oliver's pain end, although it meant the beginning of yours. Poor Whisky, how is he taking this? Hugs to your entire family. Please tell Oliver to greet our TCS kitties over RB for us, and tell them to plan a great reunion party for us all.

I too had no time to think, we took Indy to the vet on Weds to see why she was losing weight-I thought she was having a severe hairball problem which was making her throw up every day. It turned out to be a large tumour on her pancreas and he said she would soon starve to death because very little food could get in. I decided to end the suffering and not drag it out until she was too weak to move and we put her down Friday. I wish I had had more time-she was only about 10 or 11 and we had had her for about 8 years. It is so hard to lose them, especially with not much warning.

Thank you, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers! This is going to be a long process for me as I get very emotional over things like this. I've never had to deal with this in this capacity. I had to put our family dog down in '94, but wasn't able to be with her or get her ashes. I vowed that it wouldn't happen again.

There is a song that was playing on my CD player after I left after putting him down. It is called "Once Before I Sleep" by Hiroshima. Since it was the first song I heard after he died, I dedicated this song to him. I'm unofficially changing it to "Song For Oliver". It is an awesome song for a dedication.

Whisky was kind of looking around for him when I saw him today. I told him Oliver is in Heaven now waiting for you and me.

I know in time the pain will heal...but I will never forget you, Little Man!!!
