So my computer crashed last night. Totally crashed. Went black. Shut off.
Then....
The dreaded....
BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!
Only it wasn't the standard BSOD.... It was the super-duper, cracked out, steroid version. As in, your stuff is freakin FRIED!!
It said that if the screen appeared again, it indicated a MAJOR hardware problem and I should contact the manufacturer. Like I have the cash to do that.
It did this last weekend, too. It started right back up after I shut it down for a few minutes. The error report said it had over-heated, so my boyfriend and I took it apart and broke out the can of air...there was a farm of dust bunnies in there. lol So that fixed that problem.
Well, this time it wouldn't start back up. My BF and I tried everything. It kept saying that Windows was corrupted!! BAAADDD mojo. It gave us the super BSOD about 7 times. Well, eventually it let us re-start in safe mode. My BF did a system restore, and that seemed to work.
When he restarted in normal mode, there was an extra icon on his desktop...it was an error report. Java had updatd itself and installed a new driver. The new Java driver was corrupt and totally jacked our machine!!!
So far the system restore has worked...no more BSOD...for now!! lol
Though I am going to play it safe and burn off all of our data onto DVDs. Just in case.

We were talking about the computer on the way to work this morning, and I think I have him sold on getting a Mac next time around. It'll be more expensive, but it'll last longer and be more secure and all that jazz.

You know, my old PC did that too and I went out and immediately bought myself a PowerBook with Mac OSX Panther and in the year that I have had this computer, I haven't seen so much as a pop-up ad, let alone a BSOD. Great choice! You're bound to fall in love with your new Mac when you get it! It is COMPLETELY worth the extra money in terms of safety, speed, and the efficiency with the OS. Totally easy to use...you'll wonder why you ever had Windows!

Oh, I can't WAIT to get a Mac. We aren't getting one right now...this computer is only 2 years old, and we don't have the money to replace it yet. But man I can't wait. I learned how to point and click on a very early Apple. My dad always insisted on having a Mac...he won't touch a PC. Can't blame him!!
I've got the BF sold on it, too. We're music buffs, and I keep telling him about all the cool music programs you can run on a Mac.

I would have to agree with the hearty recommendations on the Mac. I have a power book G4 and I love it. I used to have a Dell Laptop but then it gave me the super duper cracked out BSOD as well in the summer of '04, and in order to make it work AT ALL we had to reformat the hard drive, and then it still ran reeeeeeeaaally slowly, the mouse pointer would drift, all kinds of weird stuff. It's in laptop heaven now.

Have fun looking at new computers--sometimes if you wait for the right time of year (usually back to school time) Mac will have deals where you can get a free ipod or free printer.

I actually miss the blue screen of death.

Well, considering I used to be a computer tech & got paid to see them and then fix 'em

As for me, I've never seen one of my computer. I used to run windows 98 (the stablest of all home end windows behind windows XP...get it if you dont want XP...or windows NT). Then again, I built my computer and maintain it so it's stable.

Macs are evil though; I used to help people to fix those at my old school's computer lab. Ekk.
